I’m not sure why we need another film version of Dune. There are already two versions out there to appeal to a variety of cinematic tastes: the 1984 David Lynch version and the more recent Sci-Fi miniseries. Apparently those two versions dind’t quite capture the world of Arrakis for everyone, however, because another version of Dune is underway.
Hollywood Reporter announced the new version of Frank Herbert’s novel may have a screenwriter attached soon. Relative newcomer Josh Zetumer is in talks with Paramount and producers Kevin Misher, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson to take on Dune and somehow produce a script that doesn’t play too much like one of the other versions.
Zetumer has a couple of projects already underway in Hollywood, but nothing actually produced as of yet. Looking at information on his other scripts (Villain and The Infiltrator), it looks like Dune would clearly be his highest profile project. Coming up with an original take on the material, however, could be quite a challenge. Luckily two of Zetumer’s producers are quite familiar with the world of Dune. Herbert and Anderson have written several new novels set in the Dune universe, although they have been received with mixed emotions.
Dune doesn’t have a set production schedule as of yet, but Peter Berg is attached as the movie’s director.
