There's been talk of a Space Jam 2 for a while and now a sequel to the ultimate 90's kid movie is finally taking off with Lebron James in the Michael Jordan role. The original Space Jam wasn't just known for mixing Jordan with the Looney Tunes, though. The movie had a bevy of cameos from some of the hottest basketball players at the time, and there's no reason to assume that Space Jam 2 won't recruit its own cast of athletes. One NBA superstar in particular is looking to get his chance to do his dance at the Space Jam: Blake Griffin of the Los Angeles Clippers.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Blake Griffin is a huge Space Jam fan. As a kid, he even had a Space Jam themed birthday party. While speaking to THR at the Ermenegildo Zegna boutique, Griffin threw his Jordan's into the ring to get a cameo or some kind of role in the sequel.
He has my vote! While he might not be looking to get into the acting game as much as LeBron, Griffin is no slouch when it comes to on-camera appearances. He has a number of commercials under his belt, where he got to show off some impressive comedy chops. Some of you might remember his KIA Optima time travel commercials or that Gamefly one where he had a jetpack. He even has one commercial where he competes with Marvin the Martian in a dunk contest; it might as well be his audition tape.
If Blake Griffin were to get a part in Space Jam 2, he would join the ranks of sports stars who have appeared in the series. Space Jam had a bunch of NBA stars appear in one way or the other. It's a list that contains the names of Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, Shawn Bradley, Muggsy Bogues and Bill Murray (who is not a sports star, but did play with a pro baseball team for one summer, so I'm counting him).
Space Jam 2 will be directed by Justin Lin. There aren't any more cast members besides Lebron James at this time, but we'll make sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available. In the meantime, keep you fingers crossed for Blake Griffin!
