Marvel Studios Has Officially Found Its Captain Marvel, Get The Details
With Benedict Cumberbatch signed as Doctor Strange, Tom Holland on-board as Spider-Man and Chadwick Boseman playing Black Panther, Marvel Studios has almost entirely cast its roster of superheroes getting new solo movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase Three... but there has been one character left as a big question mark: Captain Marvel. Because the heroine's film isn't coming out until 2019, the company has held off on announcing who would be playing her. Well, wonder no longer, as Brie Larson has been officially cast as Captain Carol Danvers.
The announcement was made this evening in front of the screaming crowds of Hall H during the Marvel Panel at San Diego Comic-Con. We first heard rumors about Brie Larson's potential casting back in early June, when trade reports said that she was in talks for the part, but Marvel has kept quiet about it these past few weeks. This is presumably because they wanted to make the big announcement during the country's biggest annual geek fest.
For those unfamiliar with the character, Carol Danvers is a member of the United States military who winds up being caught up in the explosion of a device made by the Kree (the alien race introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Ronan The Accuser in Guardians of the Galaxy). The accident winds up altering Danvers' DNA, giving her superpowers -- including the ability to fly and remarkable strength and speed. Introduced as Ms. Marvel in the comics back in January 1977, she has been a key part of the superhero world for decades.
And, of course, Brie Larson is a wonderful get for Marvel Studios. It was just a few months ago that the actress walked away with an Academy Award for her stunning performance in the hard-hitting drama Room, but that's just one of the amazing roles she's played in the last few years. Captain Marvel will actually be the second time that she's played a part in a comic book adaptation, as she previously played the villainous Envy Adams in writer/director Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.
Because of the previous rumors, tonight's big reveal that Brie Larson will play Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel isn't the most shocking news out of San Diego Comic-Con, but it certainly does make us very, very happy.
