Mary Poppins Returns May Be Looking To Include Two Important Cameos

Sequels are a funny thing. Traditionally, these films were poor imitations of the original which were developed immediately after the success of a film. They were often produced solely to make more money, and would be released just a year or two after its predecessor. However, Hollywood has started to break the sequel mold in recent years, giving new life to projects which had long been considered completed. Tons of movies from the 90's and older have been given sequels lately, perhaps the most remarkable being Mary Poppins Returns, while will continue the story from the 1964 Disney classic.

While we were all surprised that Mary Poppins would be getting a long-awaited sequel, it was clear that some cast changes were going to be necessary. Disney hit the nail on the head by booking Emily Blunt as the titular magical nanny, as well as adding Broadway royalty and Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda as a new chimney weep. But many fans have been wondering if any of the original cast would be making appearances in the long-awaited sequel. Now it appears they're in luck.

E! Online has just reported that both Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke are currently in talks to return to the world of Mary Poppins. The size and type of role the legends could play is a complete mystery, but it seems fitting that the actors who brought so many joy in their performances should return to the franchise and delight audiences again. It's also important to note that one of Julie Andrews' reps has denied any discussion occurring, but it's probably just too early to announce anything.

While the development of Mary Poppins Returns is still in its infancy, it's quickly shaping up to be an extremely exciting live-action adventure for the House of Mouse. In addition to Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the movie will also boast a performance by the legendary Meryl Streep and will be directed by Rob Marshall. Grammy, Emmy, and Tony Award winning composer Marc Shaiman will also be writing original music for the sequel which will apparently now feature Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke.

Set 20 years after the events of the original film, Mary Poppins Returns will follow an adult Jane and Michael Banks, along with Michael's three children. Set in a Depression-era London, we will see Mary Poppins return to help the kids find joy in their lives in the wake of a tragedy. Luckily for them, the practically perfect nanny will surely help Jane and Michael with some songs, laughter, and hopefully an animated sequence.

What role do you think Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke could have in Mary Poppins Returns? Should they be cameos, or bonafide roles? Sound off in the comments below.
