One of Melissa McCarthy's funniest films is Bridesmaids, the movie that launched her to comedy stardom. She's gone on to have plenty of good comedies since then - The Heat, Spy - but her next comedy will see her reuniting with an old Bridesmaid co-star, which bodes well for all of us. Maya Rudolph has joined the cast of Life of the Party, and she probably won't have to poop in a wedding dress again.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Maya Rudolph has signed on to star alongside Melissa McCarthy in Life of the Party. We don't know too many details, but she'll play the neurotic best friend to McCarthy's character. The movie is set to begin filming in Atlanta - the movie capital of the world at this point - later this month.
Life of the Party comes from McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone, who will direct the feature. The story is said to be similar in vein to Rodney Dangerfield's Back to School _(1986), which was about an aging partier who joins his son at college, where all manner of shenanigans and awkward moments happened. _Life of the Party sounds pretty similar and also takes place in a university setting. Molly Gordon (Animal Kingdom) is all set to play McCarthy's daughter, with Gillian Jacobs (Community) as a sorority sister. All in all, that's a pretty good cast.
The pairing of Melissa McCarthy and Maya Rudolph is something to look forward to, and you can never go wrong putting Rudolph in anything. She's generally pretty delightful. McCarthy and Falcone's previous collaborations - Tammy and The Boss - have generally underperformed with critics, but they do well at the box office. The inclusion of Rudolph is a pretty good step in the right direction, though, so fingers crossed that Life of the Party can reach Bridesmaids levels of height.
As for Maya Rudolph, she was recently seen in the Lonely Island's Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping. She is also coming off of a successful run on Maya and Marty, her variety show on NBC with Martin Short. Earlier this year, Rudolph appeared in several episodes of the cancelled too soon The Grinder as well as voice roles in The Angry Birds Movie and Mike Tyson Mysteries. The actress is currently filming for a movie that is awesomely called My Entire High School Sinking into the Sea.
The Life of the Party is currently being eyed for a release date of May 11, 2018.
