New Star Wars: Rogue One Trailer Teaser Delivers New Looks At Major Players
Although Star Wars Celebration released behind-the-scenes footage of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story a few weeks ago, the upcoming spinoff hasn't aired an official trailer since April. Fortunately, we don't have to wait much longer for a new preview, as it's finally arriving this Thursday during the Olympic Games. In keeping with the recent trend of teasing trailers ahead of time, we have our first look at the new Rogue One trailer a couple days early.
While the teaser for the first Rogue One trailer only provided the first look at Imperial Deathtroopers, this teaser fits in more material over the course of 15 seconds. After kicking off with someone watching a U-Wing take off, we get snippets of the main Rebel characters, from Felicity Jones' Jyn Erso to Donnie Yen's Chirrut Imwe, all of which are new aside from the shot of Diego Luna's Cassian Andor looking up. Arguably the most notable of the bunch is K-2SO, the Imperial enforcer droid (voiced by Alan Tudyk) who the Rebels have reprogrammed for their own purposes. We've barely seen K-2SO in the previous videos, so ideally the trailer will give us a good first impression of him, including how he sounds. The teaser ends with that familiar shot of the AT-ATs attacking the charging Rebels and listing what day the trailer will premiere.
This teaser is just a taste of what's to come on Thursday. The Rogue One teaser trailer was a little under two minutes, and if this spinoff follows in the footsteps of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, that means this the new trailer could be anywhere from two and a half to three minutes. With only a few months to go, this will be Disney and Lucasfilm's best opportunity yet to showcase how this Star Wars movie is different from the previous entries and get the folks who were already excited for Rogue One even more pumped up for its release.
Taking place directly before A New Hope, Rogue One will follow a group of Rebel fighters who have been tasked with stealing the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's new superweapon. Along with the previously mentioned characters, the movie's lineup includes Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook, Jiang Wen as Baze Malbus, Forest Whitaker as Saw Gererra, Mads Mikkelsen as Galen Erso and Ben Mendelsohn as Orson Krennic. The returning franchise characters include the infamous Darth Vader, Rebel leader Mon Mothma and Senator Bail Organa. This is the first of the Star Wars spinoff movies that Lucasfilm is releasing between the trilogy entries, with the Han Solo movie arriving in 2018 and a yet-to-be-named feature slated for 2020.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on December 16.
