Wonder Woman Villain Teased As Actress Promises To Be A Nightmare For The Heroes
Wonder Woman will place our hero in the middle of World War I. You'd think that would be a big enough conflict for Diana to deal with, however, it appears that we'll be getting a traditional comic book villain as well. While we don't know anything about who she is or what she's up to, actress Elena Anaya has confirmed that she'll be playing the film's antagonist, making life difficult for our heroes.
Seeing Elena Anaya in this strange mask in the trailer certainly told us there was something odd going on with her character. Now we know that, in traditional comic book style, the character looking physically wrong is actually the bad guy. It's far from clear what the mask means. Is it some sort of replacement skin to cover up some serious injury or deformity? If so, we're guessing that how she came by it will be a part of the story.
While Elena Anaya's comments to SensaCine, and translated by Batman News, that she'll be a nightmare for the heroes, certainly implies that she'll be playing a bad guy, she also admits that her role is small among the rest of the ensemble cast. Does this mean that she's a villain, but not the villain? It could be that she's a henchwoman of some kind who's only working for a larger evil. It's also possible that she's the big bad of the film but simply doesn't appear on screen very much. As we said, there is a world war going on during the film, and that would be more than enough for any hero to face for two hours. The trailer and other clips that we've seen have focused more on this, so it's possible that the "villain" just isn't a major character in the movie.
It would be a different direction to take for a superhero film, but it would be an interesting one as well. While we have already met Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, the new film is still an origin story, and as such, the focus of the film needs to be the hero. One of the reasons that villains in the Marvel films have often been weak characters is because the film's structure doesn't give them the time to develop. It's possible Wonder Woman knows this will be an issue and so has decided to simply shrink the importance of the villain entirely.
Do you think there's a bigger bad guy in Wonder Woman or will Elena Anaya be able to keep the film interesting on her own? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
