The Honest Way Disney Feels About Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
If you've been paying attention to the world of Hollywood movies you'll have noticed one truth: Disney is everywhere. The House of Mouse is responsible for some of the most popular and successful franchises in the business including The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, as well as the various Disney animation films. With that level of success, you'd think that the higher ups in the company would simply ride the victory and become complacent with the sequels and spinoffs which are currently in production. But you'd be wrong.
Disney's CEO Bob Iger recently spoke at a press conference in New York, where he outlined some of the plans Disney has for its upcoming projects. The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Iger described the upcoming Star Wars spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story as "an experiment, of sorts". Given the somewhat bumpy path that Rogue One has faced in its production, this seems like a pretty honest assessment of this new type of Star Wars movie. Additionally, Iger revealed that the House of Mouse execs are enjoying what they've seen of the film, saying: "this is a moment in time, and we've loved what we've seen".
This is a refreshingly honest update on the state of Rogue One. While still very highly anticipated, things haven't gotten quite as smoothly as they appeared to during the production of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Extensive reshoots were filmed, during which many questioned if there was another director attached to the project. Actors Mads Mikkelsen and Jiang Wen both let fairly massive spoilers slip during appearances, and there has recently been a change of composers behind the scenes. So Bob Iger's honestly about the experimental aspect of putting together this film is real- and its something that might make those who were on the fence change their minds about the upcoming spinoff.
Although Rogue One: A Star Wars Story might be having a bumpier ride than its recent predecessor, most fans of the franchise are extremely excited for another adventure in a galaxy far, far away. After waiting years for a solid addition to the franchise, we can now expect a new Star Wars movie to hit theaters every December. It's basically like Star Wars fans won the lottery. Furthermore, this movie will bring us back to the world of the original trilogy, as the film is set just before the events of A New Hope. Familiar faces Mon Monthma, Bail Organa, and even franchise mascot Darth Vader are returning to the silver screen; so really what can you not like?
As a reminder of the awesome-ness that is presumably in our future, check out the trailer for Rogue One below.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be upon us shortly, and transport us back into a world full of Stormtroopers, Rebels, and Death Stars. It should be interesting to see how its success affects future spinoffs like the untitled Han Solo movie.
Rogue One debuts in theaters on December 16th, 2016.
