The Han Solo Movie Has Found Three Female Lead Frontrunners
Harrison Ford's time as Han Solo may be over, but Star Wars fans won't be separated from the beloved smuggler for long on the big screen. As the second of the "Anthology" spinoff movies, 2018's Han Solo movie will reunite with him in his younger years, with Hail, Caesar's Alden Ehrenreich taking over the role. Beyond him, the spinoff's official cast hasn't been announced yet, but directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have reportedly narrowed down the number of actresses gunning for the female lead to three.
According to Variety, Creed's Tessa Thompson, Power Rangers' Naomi Scott and Mad Max: Fury Road's Zoe Kravitz tested for the Han Solo movie's female lead earlier this week, though the character's identity hasn't been revealed yet. These auditions occurred during the second round of tests, with the first round occurring in the early summer. Sources told the outlet that it may be a couple weeks until a final decision is made. Production is set to begin sometime in early 2017, so Miller and Lord don't have a lot of time to waste getting the main cast assembled. Regardless, we'll likely get an update which woman will be joining the movie soon.
These three actresses have slowly risen through the ranks of Hollywood stardom in the last couple years, or are heading in that direction. Along with appearing in Creed last year, Tessa Thompson will be seen next year as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok.
Naomi Scott will jump into action next March as Kimberly, the Pink Ranger in Power Rangers, her first big blockbuster role.
Zoe Kravitz's credits also include X-Men: First Class, Mad Max: Fury Road and the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. So if one of them is cast, who will they play? It's hard to say at the moment, but since this movie is set during Han Solo's younger years, i.e. pre-A New Hope, one person who springs to mind is his "wife," Sana Starros.
Introduced in issue #4 of Marvel's current Star Wars comic book series (and fully identified in issue #6), Sana Starros claims to have married Han Solo many years ago as a cover for a robbery, although he denied that they actually tied the knot. He later made off with all their loot, but she's since tracked him down following the Battle of Yavin and gotten caught up in his Rebellion adventures. Assuming the female lead is her, perhaps the spinoff will show how they first met and how this robbery went down.
While no other actors have officially been added besides Alden Ehrenreich have officially boarded the Han Solo movie, some of the characters have already been revealed. The lovable Chewbacca will appear, although whether or not Peter Mayhew will reprise the Wookie remains to be seen. Han's gambling buddy Lando Calrissian will also reportedly appear, and Atlanta star Donald Glover was previously said to be the top contender for the role. However, the Variety report also mentioned that Disney requested a second round of auditions for the young Lando "to be certain on their decision."
