The next Bad Boys film has been in development for quite a few years now, but the third film in the series is finally underway. The script is currently going through a new draft, but once that's done it's off the races for Will Smith and Martin Lawrence. While there was no doubt some challenges in finally getting the team back together, director Joe Carnahan revealed that one of the easiest things to do was actually creating the antagonist. Here's what he said:
Joe Carnahan is taking over directing duties for Bad Boys for Life from Michael Bay and the writer/director spoke with Collider about the upcoming action film. Broaching on topics like when the movie takes place and what the final rating will be (Carnahan seemed pretty positive it'd be R), the director was asked what the films Big Bad will be like. It sounds like Mike and Marcus will be squaring off against not one villain, but several.
After 13 years off the big screen, one drug kingpin just isn't enough for the Bad Boys big return. Carnahan seems to be implying that in all that time on the Miami police force, Mike (Will Smith) and Marcus (Martin Lawrence) have built up quite a list of enemies and those enemies will unite to take down those smack-talking cops. Or maybe there's some kind of secret organization, a la James Bond's Spectre, that set their targets on the Bad Boys. Who can say at this point, but it's certainly an interesting idea.
Multiple villains certainly deviates a bit away from the standard action formula. Plus, if there are two Bad Boys, wouldn't it make sense that there should be more than one villain to balance it out? Fingers crossed for the villains to be an evil version of the Bad Boys who tease each other just as much as the heroes do!
Bad Boys for Life will see Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return to adrenaline pumping action franchise. Joe Carnahan is both writing and directing the film, and not much is known about the plot or any other returning characters at this time. The film has yet to begin filming but it's currently set for a release in theaters on January 12, 2018.
