Ocean’s Eight Has Found Its Villain

It's been nearly a decade since the Ocean's trilogy finished breathed new life into the original 1960 movie, and while Danny Ocean's band of merry men lead three memorable heists over six years, now the women are getting the chance to shine. Over the last year, Ocean's Eight has been building its main cast of characters in what is now confirmed to be a spinoff of the trilogy rather than a reboot. However, there's been no word about who the protagonists will be going up against in their caper, but that mystery has been partially solved, as actor Damian Lewis will play the man antagonizing the ladies.

Damian Lewis

According to Variety, the Homeland star will play Ocean's Eight's main villain. Although his character was unnamed, he is described as being the "ex-lover" of Sandra Bullock's character, the leader of the movie's gang of thieves and also Danny Ocean's sister. Damian Lewis' villainous character will soon find himself the target of the gang's robbery, implying he's either extremely wealthy or holds an object of great importance to all of them. For those wondering how much of Lewis will actually participate in Ocean's Eight, Variety's sources state that his role will be more than just a cameo.

While no other plot details were revealed in the article, it is interesting that Sandra Bullock's character will have a close connection to Damian Lewis' character. That makes me wonder if the heist her and the other ladies are pulling off will have a person edge to it. If this crew is anything like Danny Ocean's crew, then the big score is the priority, but that doesn't mean robbing him won't double as retribution on Bullock's character's part in case he wronged her during their relationship. Whatever happened between them, this villainous man is going to find himself the target of an exciting caper. Well, exciting for moviegoers.

Damian Lewis is arguably best known for playing Nicholas Brody in the Showtime series Homeland over three seasons (and a guest spot in Season 4). His performance as the character scored him the Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2012. He can currently be seen playing Bobby Axelrod in Billions, another Showtime product. On the big screen, Lewis has recently appeared in Queen of the Desert, Bill and Our Kind of Traitor.

Lewis is the latest notable name to join Ocean's Eight during 2016. Along with him and Sandra Bullock, the main cast includes Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, Awkwafina and Dakota Fanning. Matt Damon will also cameo as Linus Caldwell, one of the main characters from the earlier trilogy.

Ocean's Eight will be released in theaters on June 8, 2018. Let us know what you think of Damian Lewis joining the movie in the comments below.
