Pacific Rim 2 Just Made A Change To Its Title, And We Approve
If you loved watching Kaiju vs. Jaeger action on the big screen in 2013, get ready for even more of that insanity in the near future. The Pacific Rim sequel is in the middle of shooting as we speak, and for a time, the upcoming blockbuster was known as Pacific Rim: Maelstrom. However, you can forget calling the follow-up that, as the movie has a new official title: Pacific Rim: Uprising.
Legendary Entertainment sent out a press release today (via Coming Soon) stating that the casually-called Pacific Rim 2 will be titled Pacific Rim: Uprising. Evidently Pacific Rim: Maelstrom was only a working title and never intended to be the final product. Title changes after productions kicks off are rare, but we definitely approve of this title more than Maelstrom more. That's not to say Maelstrom was a bad choice, but Uprising sounds more intriguing.
Now the big question is what this uprising will specifically be. The answer that immediately comes to mind is the return of the Kaiju. In case you haven't watched Pacific Rim in a while, the movie ended with the Breach, the interdimensional portal that the Kaiju were coming through, being sealed. Two Jaegers had to be detonated to accomplish this, and a few main characters sacrificed themselves during the final battle, so needles to say sealing the Breach was no easy feat. That said, it's likely the sealing wasn't as permanent as previously believed, and in the time that's passed between the first movie and Pacific Rim: Uprising, the seal has weakened to the point that the Kaiju can break through. This is the most logical option given that it wouldn't feel like a Pacific Rim movie without Kaiju terrorizing humanity, but who knows, maybe the Uprising part actually refers to the Jaeger pilots deciding to unionize because they don't feel like they're being paid enough.
Despite the title confirmation, almost all of Pacific Rim: Uprising remains shrouded in mystery, as no official plot details have been disclosed. Cast-wise, though, there are plenty of names to take in. John Boyega will lead the sequel as the son of Idris Elba's character Stacker Pentecost, while Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, Levi Meaden, Adria Arjona and Nick Tarabay are among the actors whose roles haven't been revealed yet. There's no word yet on whether any characters from Pacific Rim will return, although Charlie Hunnam, who played Raleigh Becket in the first movie, said he won't reprise his role due to scheduling conflicts. Principal photography kicked off in Australia at the beginning of November.
Pacific Rim: Uprising will be released in theaters on February 23, 2018. Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more updates on its progress as they come in.
