Hey DC, Keep Deadshot Out Of Gotham City Sirens
Cohesive cinematic universes have distinct advantages over standalone film franchises. As worlds like the DCEU continue to grow, filmmakers have the liberty to cross characters over with one another as much as they want -- regardless of whether or not it's a good idea. With that in mind, Will Smith recently confessed that he would love to see his Suicide Squad character Deadshot appear in Margot Robbie's upcoming Gotham City Sirens movie. We love Deadshot, but we have to admit that we think he should definitely stay away from Harley Quinn's upcoming adventure in order to focus on his own future in the DCEU.
Will Smith recently sat down for an interview with MTV International and pleaded his case to appear as Deadshot in Gotham City Sirens. He spoke passionately about working with Margot Robbie, and he will apparently do anything she wants to get a part in the film. As much as we love Will Smith's depiction of the world's best marksman, we think that's a terrible idea. Gotham City Sirens is already shaping up to be a crowded film with the inclusion of the Sirens team, as well as the Birds of Prey. The film is obviously still quite early in its development, but we can think of no genuine narrative reason for Deadshot to have a role any larger than a quick cameo.
Beyond that, Will Smith's Deadshot is already going to receive plenty of exposure in the near future. Between his solo movie, as well as the fact that he's probably going to factor prominently into the upcoming Suicide Squad sequel, we will likely achieve peak Floyd Lawton on the silver screen over the course of the next few years. DC should let its universe breathe and flesh out Gotham City's female population by letting Harley Quinn take center stage in Gotham City Sirens. There will be another time for Deadshot.
Let me make one thing perfectly clear; I am not saying that I don't want to see Deadshot and Harley Quinn interact on the silver screen again. Will Smith and Margot Robbie have amazing chemistry together, and their interplay ultimately proved to be one of Suicide Squad's saving graces. However, there's no doubt that these two characters will interact with one another again, and DC should take its time and let them operate on their own for a while. We've seen what happens when DC rushes things, and it rarely goes well.
