We're only one week away from the release of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, and the hype for the film has officially peaked. It's been a decade and a half since we last saw Vin Diesel's ultimate super spy kick some ass (and look dope while doing it), so we're aching to see what Mr. Cage has in store. That said, a new promo for the upcoming sequel has officially confirmed that the titular badass will apparently be joined by his successor, Darius Stone. That's right, folks; that trailer confirms that Ice Cube's Darius Stone will appear during the events of xXx: The Return of Xander Cage. It's been well over a decade since audiences last saw Stone (although that's still more recent than Xander Cage's last appearance), and I have to say that it's a welcome return. The character took over as the new xXx during the events of xXx: State of the Union when Xander Cage was presumed dead in Bora Bora, but now it seems that both of these badasses will share the silver screen. We will have to wait and see if one movie can hold all of that attitude.
I honestly hope that Darius Stone's appearance in the new xXx movie isn't just a cameo because he definitely would make a great addition to Xander Cage's team. Despite the fact that Vin Diesel kicked the franchise off as the extreme athlete-turned spy in 2002, Darius Stone's origins were a bit more conventional -- albeit equally badass. Rather than rely on athleticism or sports expertise, Stone was a former Navy SEAL with a wide variety of espionage and combat skills. To see him work alongside Vin Diesel's less conventional secret agent would provide the upcoming film with an excellent sense of balance with regards to the type of action for us to expect.
We're ultimately really not that surprised to see that xXx: The Return of Xander Cage has managed to find a way to incorporate Darius Stone into its plot. Regardless of how big his role in the film is, it's already becoming clear that the creative team behind the upcoming xXx sequel have endeavored to make the franchise more ensemble-oriented. This seems to indicate that Vin Diesel has learned from the success of the Fast & Furious films. Although Xander Cage grounds the entire affair, the film's marketing campaign has placed a heavy emphasis on the creation of the team to work alongside the titular spy. This includes Ruby Rose's Adele Wolff and Nina Dobrev's Becky Clearidge. Who knows? If The Return of Xander Cage is successful, we may even see spin-offs for all of these characters.
