New Logan Images Are Awesome But Super Grim

Last winter, the X-Men franchise made us laugh heartily with the release of Deadpool, but it doesn't look like that will be the case with the franchise's 2017 entry. Instead, director James Mangold's Logan looks as grim and serious as comic book movies get. We've received this impression from the debut trailer and multiple photos released so far, but a batch of new stills definitely continues to sell that same message as well.

As you can probably tell, this new Logan still comes to us directly from James Mangold's personal Twitter account, and the first image gives us a close up look at Patrick Stewart's Professor Xavier. As the blockbuster is set in the future, this is an older and more feeble version of the legendary telepath than we've ever seen on the big screen before, and the official synopsis for the film has revealed that he has been in the care of the titular character.

Speaking of...

The second new photo - also lacking in the Smile department - is of Logan himself. Sporting a hair and beard style very different than what audiences were introduced to in Hugh Jackman's debut as the character in 2000's X-Men, this is also an older and more weary take on the famed mutant... though his immortality is certainly helpful keeping his skin tight.

In our third and final photo from James Mangold we have one of the new characters joining the X-Men franchise. Making her big screen debut in Logan is Laura Kinney a.k.a. X-23, played by newcomer Dafne Keen. Early buzz from footage shown to press last month suggests that she has a good chance of stealing the show in the film, and we can't wait to see more of her as she joins Logan and Professor X on the run from sinister forces.

Logan, which also stars Richard E. Grant, Boyd Holbrook and Stephen Merchant, will be in theaters on March 3rd. We're also expecting a brand new trailer any day now, and you can be sure that we'll have it for you here on Cinema Blend as soon as it goes live.
