If you are anything like me, you already know that football is only a minor fraction of the appeal of the Super Bowl. The event is a major moment for movie marketing campaigns, and we typically see a ton of phenomenal trailers drop during the game. It has become a well-established tradition in recent years, and one of the most cherished moments of the game for typical movie buffs. This year proved no different. A wide array of fantastic trailers debuted during the showdown between the Patriots and the Falcons, and it now seems that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 stole the show as the most popular of the bunch on social media.
A report from Variety confirms that the trailer for James Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 has gone on to become the most talked about trailer of last night's Super Bowl festivities. According to the metrics, the upcoming superhero sequel generated 47,800 new conversations on social media -- subsequently blowing its rival trailers out of the water. For the sake of comparison, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales came in second with 25,200 new conversations, and Transformers: The Last Knight came in third with 19,700. It was not even a competition; the Patriots may have won the game, but Guardians of the Galaxy thoroughly dominated in the realm of movie marketing.
It is worth mentioning the fact that social media popularity does not always easily translate into a high-quality film. Suicide Squad dominated social media during the summer of 2016, and that movie (for all of its financial success) was widely panned by critics. That said, Guardians of the Galaxy is still very much riding high off of the astounding success of the original 2014 installment -- not to mention the other recent Marvel hits. With that in mind, there's no reason to assume that James Gunn's upcoming sequel won't continue its path of worldwide domination when it finally hits theaters in May.
