When The Next Star Wars Spinoff May Be Announced
The live action Star Wars movies are no longer restricted to trilogy entries following Disney's acquisition of the franchise. To help fill the wait between the "main movies," Lucasfilm is releasing Anthology movies, i.e. standalone spinoffs set in that galaxy far, far away. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story kicked off the Anthology line last December, and the young Han Solo movie will come out next year. There is also a third spinoff scheduled for release in 2020, and Star Wars fans have been dying to know what it will be about. Well, it sounds like might not have to wait much longer, because according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, an announcement about this mysterious Star Wars movie may be coming in just a few months. When asked about when we'll learn what this third Anthology movie is, Kennedy said:
So while an announcement isn't set in stone right now, Kathleen Kennedy is optimistic that Lucasfilm will finally spill some of the proverbial beans this summer. Kennedy didn't provide a more specific time frame to MTV on when this announcement could come, but there are two big events happening later this year that would be great places to drop said announcement: San Diego Comic-Con and Disney's D23 convention. I suspect the latter will be the preferred place to talk about the third Star Wars spinoff given how much time was dedicated to The Force Awakens and Rogue One at 2015's D23, not to mention wanting to keep that Disney synergy going. Last week's Star Wars Celebration would have been a great place to talk about this spinoff, too, but that event was already packed with The Last Jedi content and celebrating the franchise's 40th anniversary.
As for what this third Anthology movie may end up being, there's been no shortage of speculation. However, two of the more popular choices among fans are a Boba Fett movie or an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie. In fact, the Boba Fett movie was reportedly supposed to be announced at 2015's Star Wars Celebration, and there would have been a teaser reel screened. After director Josh Trank departed, it was placed in carbon freeze, and there's been no word on its progress. As for an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, which many guess would be set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, it was reported last year that Lucasfilm might be planning something centered around the Jedi Master for after Episode IX. Ewan McGregor has also said on numerous occasions that he would be up to reprising Obi-Wan in his own movie, but whether or not the actor has had official discussions with Lucasfilm about such a project is uncertain.
For now, all we know for sure about this third Star Wars Anthology movie is it will be released in 2020 and it has a writer attached, but ideally the announcement of what it is will arrive in the summer as Kathleen Kennedy hopes. Let us know what you'd like from this spinoff in the comments below.
