When James Cameron announced that he was finally ready to move forward with a sequel to Avatar, it was met with a collective, "Huh?" It's been almost eight years since Avatar hit theaters and though it's still the highest-grossing movie in the world, time had seemingly faded any strong desires for a follow-up adventure to Pandora. However, Cameron doesn't give up easy and as he finalizes prep for Avatar 2, he's revealed the intended release dates for the next FOUR Avatar films, between 2020 and 2025. Check it out below.
James Cameron shared the news himself via Facebook with a picture of himself and the huge team that will be working on these movies. Cameron wrote that it was "great to be working with the best team in the business!" and revealed that they will be concurrently working on the production of all four Avatar sequels. The sequels currently don't have any titles but the release schedule is as follows: Avatar 2 hits theaters on December 18, 2020; Avatar 3 arrives just the following year on December 17, 2021; then audiences are getting a break for the next few years before Avatar 4 releases December 20, 2024; finally, Avatar 5 (we assume) wraps the series on December 19, 2025.
Never let it be said that James Cameron isn't an ambitious director. He is all set to spend the next eight years of his life making Avatar movies. He's got the designs for loads of new creatures and locations to show off for the sequels, and Sigourney Weaver has gone on the record saying that the script for Avatar 2 and its sequels are "amazing." They better be too, considering that it was the scripting process that partly contributed to the many delays Avatar 2 has had in its long development history. The movies also had to wait for technology to develop enough to pull off whatever Cameron has in mind for the rest of the franchise.
Avatar 2 will begin filming very shortly, as returning actor Zoe Saldana confirmed that rehearsals will begin in June. Not much is known about what Avatar 2 will be about but several key players from the first film will be reprising their roles such as Sam Worthington, Saldana and even Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, whose characters died in the film. After all these years of waiting, it's finally time to see what more Pandora has in store for us.
Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2020, where it may or may not go head to head with a Star Wars movie. To learn more about the long-delayed sequel, make sure to check out everything we know about the upcoming film.
