It's hard enough to believe that we're on the eighth Fast and Furious movie right now, but who would have thought that the eighth movie of anything could be making this much money. The Fate of the Furious already had the biggest worldwide opening of all time, but the action flick is hardly content to just stop there. Now poised to hold the No. 1 spot for the third weekend in a row, The Fate of the Furious has just reached the goal of every major studio blockbuster. This weekend, The Fate of the Furious has surpassed $1 billion at the box office.
Variety reports that The Fate of The Furious is now a billion dollar grossing movie. In its third weekend in theaters, the film has grossed $1.06 billion at the box office worldwide. Domestically, it has earned $192.7 million while foreign markets contributed the rest with $867.6 million. If anyone was at all thinking that these movies were losing their appeal, consider those doubts put to rest for the foreseeable future.
The Fate of the Furious already broke records coming out the gate. The eighth film in the high-speed action franchise had the biggest worldwide opening of all time with $542 million, beating out the previous title holder, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The film has not slowed down since, remaining at number one for three weeks in a row. However, the film hasn't had much in competition and we'll see how it holds going up against the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, releasing this weekend.
While The Fate of The Furious is hardly done earning money, it is not yet the highest grossing Fast and Furious film. That honor still goes to Furious 7 with its $1.52 billion total. However, the Fast and Furious sequels have the truly impressive trend of earning more money than their predecessors, so The Fate of the Furious is highly likely to surpass Furious 7. Whether the team at Universal is still able to top itself with Fast and Furious 9 or the Hobbes/Shaw spin-off still remains to be seen.
Directed by F. Gary Gray and written by Chris Morgan (both of whom must be feeling pretty awesome right about now), The Fate of the Furious saw Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel) manipulated into turning against his family and working for cyber terrorist Cipher (Charlize Theron). Though arguably not the best in the franchise, the movie still contained plenty of the high-octane action and cheesy humor that fans have grown accustomed to. The film starred Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Chris 'Ludacris' Bridges, Tyrese Gibson, Kurt Russell, and Charlize Theron.
The Fate of the Furious is currently in theaters, available for you to see for at least the third time.
