Wonder Woman Box Office Projections Are Down From A Few Weeks Ago

Superhero movies have been regularly been making bank for years now - but there's still a degree of unpredictability that comes with each new release's opening weekend. Some do just well enough to establish a solid foundation for a blossoming franchise, and others shatter records. According to recent estimates, it looks as though Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman may ultimately fall in the former camp, as predicted box office numbers for the project's opening are down $20 million from where they were a month ago.

Deadline has published the most recent research from box office analysts, and the projections suggest that Wonder Woman will make $65 million-plus when it is released on June 2nd. In early April, reports suggested that the DC Comics blockbuster was looking at the possibility of an $83 million haul. It's important to note that these estimates do fluctuate, and the new trade report even says that the numbers could jump back up to $75 million next week - but that obviously just further feeds our curiosity about how the movie will ultimately perform.

It's worth mentioning that while a proposed $65 million score for Wonder Woman doesn't exactly shine next to the $145 million just made by Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, it's a number hardly without precedent for a debut superhero solo movie. As Deadline points out, the estimated take has the film making exactly as much as both Captain America: The First Avenger and Thor did in their respective debuts - and those movies really are perfect comparisons (Wonder Woman is kind of a mix of both Marvel blockbusters, mixing high-fantasy elements with a 20th century wartime setting). Since then, both of those 2011 movies have launched successful sequels that outpaced their predecessors on opening weekend and in total worldwide gross.

Of course, one major thing that separates Wonder Woman from the rest of the comic book movie blockbusters of the last decade is the gender of its titular character. Some are going to see the film as a test to see if male audiences will turn out for a female-fronted superhero flick - and it looks as though they will. One analyst is paraphrased in the new report saying that the Patty Jenkins-directed feature is getting attention from all four quadrants.

Given that Wonder Woman is set up to be one of the biggest blockbusters of summer 2017, we here at CinemaBlend will most definitely be keeping a close eye on it... but how are you all feeling about it now that we are a few weeks from the film's release? Are you planning on being there opening weekend, or are you hesitating? Answer our poll below, and tell us what you think in the comments section.
