The summer is the traditional season for action and adventure at the movies, however, as the first trailer for The Mountain Between Us reveals, the fall will have plenty of excitement as well. The film co-stars Idris Elba and Kate Winslet as a pair of strangers who find themselves stranded in the wilderness together following a plane crash. If you like your movies filled with tension, then this could be the movie for you. Check it out.
The setup for The Mountain Between Us is the sort of thing that you just know is going to end badly for its characters. Idris Elba plays a surgeon who needs to get someplace in a hurry to perform an emergency surgery. Kate Winslet plays a woman trying to make it home in order to get married. However, airport delays have the two of them looking for alternatives in order to get where they need to be. The two strangers charter a small plane together since they're apparently heading in the same direction, but opportunity becomes tragedy when the plane crashes in the Utah wilderness, killing the pilot, injuring Kate Winslet, and leaving the pair with little hope of survival.
Of course, the pair will attempt to make their way to safety, because if they didn't there wouldn't be much of a movie. Idris Elba's character specifically states in the trailer that their chances of rescue are much higher if they stay at the crash site, which is absolutely true, and yet they will "take a chance" because they fear they'll be dead before anybody has any idea where to look for them.
While the first trailer focuses a great deal on the action associated with the two being stranded and trying to find a way to civilization, the novel that the film is based on also deals with the growing romantic tension between the two as they attempt to survive together. We do see some of that here, but based on the way the story has been described previously, it would seem that the movie will be as much about the personal relationship between the characters as it will be about the situation they find themselves in.
The Mountain Between Us has been a film in development for quite some time. Five years ago Michael Fassbender was rumored to be in talks to play the male lead. Then Charlie Hunnam was attached before Idris Elba eventually stepped in. Rosamund Pike was going to play the female lead before dropping out to make way for Kate Winslet. The script has also gone through at least one major revision in that time.
The Mountain Between Us has a stellar pair of lead actors who it appears will be carrying the entire film on their shoulders. The movie will arrive in theaters October 20.
