Prior to getting the job as the new Spider-Man, Tom Holland co-starred in a film alongside another Avenger. Holland tried to use that relationship to bolster his chances of playing the wall-crawler. It very nearly didn't work out that way. Tom Holland says he asked his In the Heart of the Sea co-star Chris Hemsworth to put in a good word for him with Marvel in an attempt to land the Spider-Man job. Hemsworth responded by saying that he would, but then joked that he would tell Marvel only terrible things about him. According to Holland...
I sent him an email while auditioning sort of like, 'Hey Chris. So, I'm auditioning for Spider-Man. Can you let them know that I'm amazing or something?' And he replied like, 'Hey mate. Yeah, I'll let them know that you never learn your lines you're late all the time and terrible at your job.' I was like, 'Thanks Chris.'
Apparently, part of being in the Marvel Studios family means giving you co-stars, or potential co-stars, a hard time, at least according to what Tom Holland told Yahoo Movies. When Holland was one of the names attached to the new Spider-Man, we saw the man go all out in his campaign to get the role. He posted several videos of himself doing acrobatic moves to Instagram, something he apparently also included in every audition video he sent to Marvel. Holland wanted the job bad, so of course, he was going to reach out to his existing relationships if he thought they might be able to help him. Whether you're auditioning to be Spider-Man or trying to get any other new job, previous relationships can often spell the difference.
Honestly, getting this sort of a response from Chris Hemsworth was probably the best thing that could possibly happen. If you have the sort of relationship where you can joke with each other like this, it probably means you've reached out to the right person. That does seem to be the case here as Tom Holland says that, while Chris Hemsworth joked about telling Marvel terrible things, he, in fact, did talk to Marvel on Holland's behalf.

Now, the only question is whether or not the In the Heart of the Sea co-stars will be on screen together again. Both Tom Holland and Chris Hemsworth will be in Avengers: Infinity War, and, we assume, Avengers 4, but at this point, we have no idea exactly who will be doing what, where or when. Spider-Man and Thor could be a fantastic team up, especially considering the slightly lighter tone that we're going to see in Thor: Ragnarok, the pair could be quite funny together. Tom Holland will make his solo Spider-Man debut in Spider-Man: Homecoming July 7.
