Val Kilmer Really Wants A Role In Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise has been making the rounds for his upcoming new movie The Mummy, but while he's all in on Universal's new Dark Universe franchise, he's also been super happy to talk about the upcoming revival of Top Gun, which has been rolling with the subtitle Maverick. Now, that we know that movie is in the works, it's no real surprise that some former Top Gun cast members are, well, gunning for roles in the new project. Enter Val Kilmer, who played Iceman in the original movie and is clearly playfully pushing to come back. Here's the latest:
The tweet shows us Val Kilmer harkening back to his younger days with an Iceman t-shirt. In the comments, someone asks him if he's been signed on to Top Gun: Maverick, yet, and he responds that he doesn't "know yet." Last night Tom Cruise admitted to Jimmy Fallon that Maverick has a script and that the movie is definitely moving forward, but clearly all the casting pieces aren't together yet, leading Val Kilmer to hope and wonder if he will be invited to the party.
Val Kilmer has already been open in a few other forums about wanting to come back to the franchise, flat-out stating in an AMA earlier this year:
Of course a lot has changed in the 31 years since Top Gun first hit theaters. We'll have to wait and see if Iceman is the direction the new movie will want to go in.
On the bright side, we've been talking about a potential remake for Top Gun for a quite a while. Tom Cruise brought it up way back in 2015 in an interview where he talked about wanting to fly the jets, again, and in an era that is ripe for reboots and remakes, this certainly doesn't come off like the worst idea. The fact that it now seems to finally be coming together and even has a plot is a great sign; instead of talking about the possibility of another movie, hopefully we'll start seeing the cast and crew get fleshed out over the next few months.
Tom Cruise is an actor who has a pretty busy schedule and hops from product to product, but it seems that Top Gun is going to be a priority for the actor, and soon. Of course, he has the upcoming The Mummy and American Made, first, and the trailer for the latter movie just dropped this week. In recent months, he was also filming the upcoming Mission: Impossible 6. As for Val Kilmer, he has Mark Twain and Mary Baker Eddy, The Snowman and more coming up. We'll let you know as soon as Top Gun: Maverick starts casting, however.
