Luke Skywalker's lightsaber from Star Wars: A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back is one of the most iconic pieces of weaponry in all of moviedom. There's a reason that finding the saber played such a significance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and will now be wielded by Rey for the foreseeable future. But she's not the only one who'll get a Luke Skywalker lightsaber. An original prop of the lightsaber is going up for auction, which means some lucky fan with money to burn can hold the same prop once used by Mark Hamill.
The Profile Hollywood Auction 89 is offering a slew of movie memorabilia to the highest bidder. In honor of the 40th anniversary of Star Wars, an authentic prop from A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back is up for sale: Luke Skywalker's original lightsaber. The saber comes from the personal collection of producer Gary Kurtz and was once used by Mark Hamill on the set of the two of the most popular Star Wars movies. The auction will occur between Monday, June 26 and 28 in Los Angeles.
So, you too can feel like a Jedi and possess one of the most sought after prizes in cinema history, giving you some serious geek cred and bragging rights. However, you're going to need some serious cash if you ever want to see this glorious prop resting on your mantle. The auction is expecting the lightsaber to sell between $150,000 and $250,000. For reference, the last time a Luke Skywalker lightsaber prop was sold at auction, it sold for $240,000. That's a lot of money for something that you can't actually do anything with, but if you've got the cash lying around, who are we to say how you should spend it?
Also being offered up in the auction is an unprecedented complete used R2-D2 unit used on the set of Star Wars. You can literally own R2-D2. That one's also likely to sell for a pretty penny, so save up! The final Star Wars memorabilia being offered up are some original concept artworks from Tom Jung, which were used to create the posters for the original Star Wars trilogy. All of these are really cool pieces of work that anyone would be lucky to have and some rich fan is going to be extremely happy.
The auction isn't only selling Star Wars stuff. Lots of movie memorabilia is up for grabs, ranging from props and costumes from some iconic films to vintage signed autographs of classic celebrities. Among some of the most notable pieces being sold are an actual script from the classic Casablanca; The Atlantean Sword from Conan the Barbarian; the mermaid tale from Splash; puppets and set pieces from The Nightmare Before Christmas; and a Wizard of Oz book signed by the entire cast (including Toto's pawprints) of the film version.
The Hollywood Auction 89 takes place from June 26 -- June 28, so be one the lookout for some seriously lucky nerds at the end of the month.
