The Happy Death Day Trailer Is Like Groundhog's Day, With Murder
It's a good time to be a horror fan. While the early 2000s brought on a slew of torture porn and unoriginal sequels, the past few years have been a bit of a renaissance for the genre. We're seeing wholly original concepts be introduced, and therefore create new successful franchises. Many of the best scary movies from in recent memory spawn from company Blumhouse Productions, and now it looks like they've got another hit on their hands with Happy Death Day. Revolving around a girl who keeps reliving the day of her death ala Bill Murray in Groundhog Day, the film looks like a wild ride that combines humor and scares into a glorious new mixture. Check it out.
Pretty cool, right? Let's break down what this trailer is showing us.
Happy Death Day revolves around college student Tree (lol), played by newcomer Jessica Roth. She wakes up on the morning of her birthday in a strange bed, and promptly takes the walk of shame back to her sorority house. And after rallying her hangover and going back out that night for her big day, she's savagely murdered at a party by an assailant in a pig mask.
Tree then wakes up in the same stranger's bed, once again on the morning of her birthday. While making the same walk of shame, Tree realizes that she is indeed living out the exact same day as before, down to various college residents she encounters, the campus' sprinkler system, and most importantly her alarm song: 50 Cent's "In Da Club". After all, it is indeed her birthday.
We see through the rest of Happy Death Day's trailer how Tree continually attempts to avoid her death by the masked assailant, although she's unsuccessful and once again wakes up on the morning of her birthday. She eventually opens up to her recent sexual partner Carter (Israel Broussard) about her Groundhog Day-esque existence, and the two try to make a plan to find Tree's killer, and therefore end her cycle. But since every day starts new, the two will likely have to repeat the same conversation over and over again, 50 First Dates style.
Happy Death Day is just the latest exciting horror film to come from Jason Blum and Blumhouse Studios. The production company has quickly become the go to place for successful horror installments, including Insidious, The Purge franchise, Split, and Get Out.
The upcoming horror movie was written and directed by Christopher B. Landon, who has quite a bit of experience within the horror genre. Landon was a major figure in the Paranormal Activity franchise, having written four films in the series, and directed the standalone film Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones.
