In Marvel Studios' very busy Phase 3, Captain Marvel will make her live-action debut. Her solo movie is sandwiched right between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4, but it sounds like Carol Danvers won't be alone when her solo movie finally hits theaters. Nick Fury, the connective tissue of the earlier MCU films, is rumored to be involved with Captain Marvel and it's for more than just a cameo. A new report claims that Samuel L. Jackson will co-star in Captain Marvel, though further details are unknown.
Nick Fury is no stranger to appearing wherever the MCU needs him most, having first appeared in 2008's Iron Man and then providing support in five more movies afterward. Now Nick Fury could be getting called upon once again. Christopher M. from Omega Underground wrote on his Twitter page that it "looks like" Samuel L. Jackson will be co-starring in Captain Marvel with an expected shoot date on January 8 of next year in Atlanta. Christopher M. also writes that this is not official yet but that it's the prevailing word right now. So, nothing is confirmed yet, but the case looks fairly strong with this one.
This new rumor lines up with a previous one that came from Samuel L. Jackson himself. The actor said that Nick Fury "maybe be a part of" Captain Marvel, which made it seem like there were discussions currently happening. If the above rumor is to be believed, the talks have gone well, and Fury be on hand to help Carol Danvers become adjusted to her new life as a superhero. Seeing Nick Fury is the film isn't a massive shock, but if he's truly "co-starring" in the movie, then we could see an MCU performance from Samuel L. Jackson we haven't seen since Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Nick Fury is an extremely malleable character, able to show up in pretty much any movie in the MCU -- barring the space-set ones. Him showing up in Captain Marvel makes a good amount of sense, as Carol Danvers has a background in the Air Force, and Nick Fury would likely have heard of any incident that gives someone superpowers. Considering that Captain Marvel is supposed to be the most powerful character in the MCU, that's something that's certainly worthy of the attention of Nick Fury.
Captain Marvel is still in the early stages of development and as such, there isn't much known about the movie. Brie Larson will lead the cast in the title role while Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck will direct. Screenwriter Nicole Perlman has said that it will be an origin story but it won't follow the one seen in the comics exactly. Nick Fury's supposed presence could be to give the film a more established connection to the MCU at large.
Captain Marvel is currently scheduled to release in theaters on March 8, 2019. For more updates on the film, make sure to keep it right here at CinemaBlend.
