One Marvel Director Is Open To Introducing Blade To The MCU
Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters this weekend, but although the average theatergoer hasn't seen the film yet, that hasn't stopped director Jon Watts from already looking ahead to the future. Down the road, we're going to get Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, and while Jon Watts hasn't been cemented as the director of the sequel, yet, he'd definitely like to be involved, and he recently spoke out about what villains could be a part of the new movie. After talking a little bit about Chameleon, Watts also said Morbius might be an option, which could also lead to a nice Blade surprise for fans. He said:
The subject of Blade returning in a new MCU film gets brought up every now and again, but it's been on peoples' minds lately, thanks to Kevin Feige calling the character a "legacy character." The fact that Jon Watts might just throw in Blade flippantly with a villain like Morbius is a pretty fun idea---now just think what the director could do with some more time to hone an actual script (with a slew of other writers)!
Jon Watts was led into talking about Morbius by We Got This Covered, which mentioned Morbius would be a cool villain. However, he came up with the possibility of Blade popping in somewhere in the movie, presumably because Blade is a vampire and Dr. Michael Morbius dealt with a blood disease that turned him into a sort-of vampire. Morbius and Blade actually have a history in the comics, and at one point Blade was bitten by Morbius, which gave him the ability to walk in the sunlight. Blade had teamed up with Spider-Man at that point, so who knows where a potential Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 plotline could go, especially if the movie decides to do the whole vampire angle.
Of course, it should be noted that although Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 is definitely in the cards, there's no guarantee that Jon Watts will be back for the movie. Although Marvel has used directors multiple times in the past, and notably the Russo brothers will be back again for Avengers: Infinity War, we'll have to wait and see how Homecoming is received before we learn whether or not Watts will be back. Add to that the fact that this is just an idea Watts tossed out and not something he'd really like to do, and this may not be exactly how we see Blade return to the MCU. It's still pretty fun to think about, however.
The one thing we know for certain, thanks to Kevin Feige, is that Blade will eventually return to the MCU. The real question is when that could happen, and whether or not it will be r-rated if and when it does. (Although if it's through Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, the latter question is already pretty much answered.) In the meantime, be sure to check out Spider-Man: Homecoming this weekend, so Watts has a better chance at coming back for more. And take a look at what else Marvel has coming up with our full guide.
