Thor: Ragnarok’s Merch Just Revealed Another Villain
We have seen Thor Odinson (Chris Hemsworth) fight some pretty big bad guys during his tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we have seen him gloat about fighting even BIGGER monsters during his downtime. As a hero known for his immense strength and his impressive fighting prowess, his very nature allows him to tackle threats that heroes like Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) or Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) could never handle without the help of other members of The Avengers roster. However, new evidence hints that Thor: Ragnarok will send our Asgardian hero up against one of his biggest foes yet. In fact, a new line of merchandise for Thor: Ragnarok suggests that classic Marvel villain Surtur will show up at some point.
A newly revealed Funko Pop for Thor: Ragnarok from the toy company's website has shown that Surtur will play a role in the movie's story. This is not necessarily surprising, as the character factors into the original Ragnarok storyline and certain imagery from Ragnarok's trailer (such as Thor surrounded by pools of fire) lines up with the possibility of him appearing. That said, this toy reveal doesn't necessarily do much to tell us how the demonic villain will factor into Thor: Ragnarok's already robust cast of characters -- which includes Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Hela (Cate Blanchett), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), The Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) and Heimdall (Idris Elba).
By the way, just in case you do not already know: Surtur is larger than his Funko Pop suggests. He is significantly bigger than the God of Thunder, in fact. Check out a picture of the enormous being below to get a sense of his massive size.
As far as powers go, Surtur is an enemy that Thor will not want to take lightly. A demon from the fiery dimension of Muspelheim, Surtur has super strength, the ability to manipulate fire and can manipulate molecules at will -- on top of an already impressive intellect. Oh, and did we already mention that he's huge? Marvel Cinematic Universe films have gradually increased their size and scale over the course of the last three phases, and Surtur is a perfect example of how far this franchise has come since its humble beginnings.
Thor: Ragnarok will debut in theaters later this year on November 3. If you are currently jonesing for a Marvel Cinematic Universe adventure and can't wait that long, then make sure to check out Spider-Man: Homecoming -- which opens wide in theaters today.
