Considering how popular the superhero movie genre currently is, it's all the more fitting that The Incredibles 2 will arrive in 2018, 14 years after the original was received with critical acclaim. While the sequel has been in the works for years, Disney and Pixar have understandably stayed mum about what to expect from the reunion with the superpowered Parr family. That changed today, as a few plot details were dropped today, namely that The Incredibles 2 will center on Elastigirl this time around.
In addition to the Jack-Jack-centric Incredibles 2 footage shown off during the Disney and Pixar animation presentation today at D23, it was announced that rather than put Bob Parr, a.k.a. Mr. Incredible, in the spotlight again, Helen Parr, a.k.a. Elastigirl, will be at the forefront of the action. While she's out using her stretching powers to fight the forces of evil, Bob will be at home taking care of Jack-Jack. The family still doesn't know about the baby's incredible powers (pun intended) at the start of the movie, but judging by the scene showed at the expo, they'll find out soon. Picking up immediately after The Incredibles, The Incredibles 2 will continue to follow the family members dealing with their everyday human issues while they fight the forces of evil as superheroes.
While Elastigirl certainly wasn't lacking for screen time in The Incredibles, it's nice to hear that she'll be the leading superhero in The Incredibles 2. Like Bob, Helen was one of the old-school superheroes active before the government set up its superhuman relocation program, and now that she and her family are back in action, it's a good idea to turn the tables and have her be the one who's out in the field while Bob stays at home to take care of the kids. Of course, given that the Parr family also functions as an effective superhero team, we can expect them to band together later in the movie to battle whatever main antagonist is threatening the world this time.
Along with the tidbits of Incredibles 2 plot information came casting confirmations The sequel will see the return of Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible, Holly Hunter as Elastigirl, Sarah Vowell as Violet, Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone, Brad Bird (the director) as Edna Mode and John Ratzenberger as The Underminer. The sole new cast member who's been announced so far is Huck Milner, who will succeed Spencer Fox as the voice of Dash. That being said, today's Incredibles 2 presentation indicated that a lot of new superheroes will be introduced, so stay tuned for more information about these fresh faces.
As an added bonus, an amusing video was released that focused on Edna Mode, fashion designer extraordinaire for supermodels and superheroes alike.
The Incredibles 2 charges into theaters on June 15, 2018.
