What DC Reportedly Plans To Do With The Joker And Harley Quinn
While Suicide Squad wasn't the critical hit that Warner Bros and DC hoped it would be, not only was it a impressive commercial success, it's also spawning a number of movies to populate this unique corner of the DC Extended Universe. In addition to Suicide Squad 2, Gotham City Sirens is also on the way, which will see Squad member Harley Quinn teaming up with Poison Ivy and Catwoman. Now there's word that DC is developing a Joker vs. Harley Quinn movie on top of that.
According to Screen Rant, both Margot Robbie and Jared Leto are primed to reprise Harley Quinn and The Joker, respectively, in Harley Quinn vs. The Joker. No other details were revealed other than that it is a spinoff and that Geoff Johns will produce, but with a title like that, it sounds like this will see Harleen Quinzel finally separating from the Clown Prince of Crime, which subsequently ignites a conflict between them.
Harley Quinn was introduced in Batman: The Animated Series in 1992, and for nearly two decades afterwards, she was mainly known as The Joker's main squeeze. Granted, there were times that she temporarily left Joker or went on her own adventures, but it wasn't until the New 52 relaunch in 2011 that Harley permanently separated herself from The Joker's side, and nowadays in the comics she's primarily either getting into shenanigans solo or going on Suicide Squad missions. The Suicide Squad movie melded classic and modern Harley by forcing her into the Squad, but by also showing that she was still madly in love with Joker. Margot Robbie's Harley was already set to branch off on her own in Gotham City Sirens, but now with Harley Quinn vs. The Joker reportedly in development, the DCEU is taking a cue from recent comics and have her lead the white-skinned, green-haired psychopath's side for good.
Should Harley Quinn vs. The Joker move forward, it will continue the current trend of highlighting villains/anti-heroes in their own movies. In addition to Suicide Squad 2 and Gotham City Sirens, Black Adam is also in development for the DCEU, while over in Sony's Marvel realm, that studio working on Venom and Silver & Black (the latter starring Black Cat and Silver Sable). Harley Quinn vs. The Joker also adds yet another Batman mythos-centric project to the DCEU's lineup, which includes the solo Batman movie, Batgirl and Nightwing.
Stay tuned to CinemaBlend for more news on if Harley Quinn vs. The Joker does indeed get the green light, but as it stands now, DC fans should likely expect Harley Quinn to return in either Suicide Squad 2 or Gotham City Sirens first, although neither of those movies have release dates yet. As for The Joker's next appearance, that's unclear, although with Matt Reeves starting from scratch on the Batman movie, perhaps the director/writer will find a way to include the Clown Prince of Crime in that story.
