Deadpool was unlike any comic book movie that we had ever seen when it was released last year. The sequel, however, will apparently have something in common with a somewhat different sort of film. The creator of Deadpool Rob Liefeld says that with the inclusion of Josh Brolin as Cable, Deadpool 2 is going to essentially be a comic book buddy cop movie, comparing it to the Chris Tucker/Jackie Chan franchise Rush Hour. [Josh Brolin's] such a great actor, that's where it starts, and gravitas, and who else really is going to hold their ground with Ryan as Wade/Deadpool? That is energy unbridled, and so you've gotta hold your ground. When I see the two of them I'm like 'It's going to be comic book's equivalent to Rush Hour', and I don't know if comic fans are ready for it. I think it's going to be great.
While a comparison between Deadpool and a buddy cop comedy might seem odd at first, we can certainly see where an idea like that comes from. We know who Deadpool is as a character, with the non-stop jokes and insults. With Josh Brolin's Cable being added to the sequel, he'll be playing the role of the traditional straight man in the pair. The buddy cop formula certainly works, it's just that in this case, the bad guys that our heroes are chasing are supervillain mutants.
Rob Liefeld tells comicbook.com that he's not sure if fans are ready for the Deadpool sequel. Certainly, they've never seen a superhero buddy cop comedy on the big screen, but one would think that if you saw Deadpool and enjoyed it, as most people seem to have done, this is exactly the sort of thing that you would expect. Anything that was a more traditional superhero story would be taking out a lot of what made Deadpool special.
The buddy cop formula has been used a lot in movies over the years but using Rush Hour as the point of comparison certainly makes some sense. In that movie, Chris Tucker played an American police detective paired with a visiting Chinese cop, played by Jackie Chan. In the movie, the culture clash between the two meant that quite often Chan's character literally didn't understand what Tucker's character was doing, leading to the film's comedy. We'd expect something similar to happen in Deadpool 2. Traditionally, Cable is actually a visitor from the future, so his culture is significantly different from the one he finds himself in, which we can see leading to a lot of the same sorts of jokes. The fact that he's working with Deadpool, one of the crazier elements of the modern world will only make things worse.
Deadpool 2 will hit theaters in 2018.
