Why Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Is Happening, According To Doug Liman

Although Doug Liman's Edge of Tomorrow was arguably a box office disappointment when it premiered in 2014, the film has developed a cult following since its release. In fact, that fanbase will soon be rewarded with the highly anticipated sequel Live Die Repeat and Repeat, which will bring Liman, Tom Cruise, and Emily Blunt back into the fray for a follow-up that reportedly defies everything we know about sequels. Enthusiasm for the franchise remains high three years later, and that fan interest is what ultimately spurred Liman to develop Live Die Repeat and Repeat. Liman explained:

I was not going to make a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, I'm not really interested in sequels, I'm interested in trying new things, new places. But we came up with an idea for a sequel that's so shockingly revolutionary for how a sequel would get made, and it's so fresh and it's such a fun story. We only even started talking about a sequel because there was so much fan affection for the movie, that people started asking us about a sequel. There was so much love for the film. It used to be that people come up to me and talked to me about The Bourne Identity. But Edge of Tomorrow is the one that people constantly come up and talk to me about. There's so much affection for the movie we at least owe looking at it to see if there's an idea for a sequel and we came an idea that I can't stop talking about.

Doug Liman is not known for sequels, but he's trying to earn one for this universe that fans will appreciate. Taking what he has to say about Live Die Repeat and Repeat into account, it seems that he has found an idea that's worth exploring, but doesn't necessarily rehash the exact story of the first movie. It capitalizes on the fact that fans want to see more adventures in this world, but it will also (according to Liman) do something with this narrative that fans might not expect (though we're not sure what that means yet). The Bourne Identity director has previously spoken at length about the notion that Live Die Repeat and Repeat is a "sequel that's a prequel," and given the franchise's complicated tinkering with the concept of time, we could be due for a mind-bending story that completely revolutionizes traditional sequel conventions.

Beyond Doug Liman's comments to Flickering Myth about his enthusiasm for Live Die Repeat and Repeat, he has also made it clear there's simply more potential for Edge of Tomorrow's characters. CinemaBlend recently had a chat with him about the highly anticipated sequel, and we asked him how he plans to evolve Tom Cruise's character in this new story. By Liman's assessment, there's plenty of room to maneuver with Bill Cage because the character's arc only takes him from reluctant hero to anti-hero during the events of the first movie. With the move into Live Die Repeat and Repeat, we will see Cage become more selfless and make heroic decisions that don't merely center on self-preservation. Cruise may be well known for guys like Top Gun's Maverick and Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt, but this progression could make Bill Cage one of his most enduring characters if Liman manages to pull off this sequel.

CinemaBlend will keep you posted with more information related to Live Die Repeat and Repeat as new developments occur. Make sure to check out Doug Liman's latest collaboration with Tom Cruise when American Made premieres in theaters on September 29.
