Marvel Studios is in high production mode right now. Avengers 4 and Ant-Man & the Wasp are currently filming, while Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther are assembling their cuts. Among the many other projects currently in-development, Captain Marvel is gearing up for production sometime time early next year. Directors Anna Bolden and Ryan Fleck are working on getting their cast and crew together and they've just scored a major talent. Oscar nominee Andy Nicholson has joined the crew as the production designer.
According to FlickeringMyth, Andy Nicholson is re-teaming with Marvel for Captain Marvel. Nicholson previously worked with Marvel as the art director for Captain America: The First Avenger. That film was a period piece set in the 1940s, while Captain Marvel is set some point in the 90s. It could be that Marvel is hoping for Nicholson to nail the look and feel of a past decade much like he did with First Avenger.
Andy Nicholson has a number of other notable titles under his belt, having worked in the art department for various Hollywood projects for decades. His production designer credits include Divergent, Assassin's Creed, The Host, and most recently Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. His most notable achievement was for his work on Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity, for which Nicholson scored an Oscar nomination. Nicholson knows a thing or two about designing outer space, which should come in really handy on a film like Captain Marvel, which has an intergalactic component.
In case anyone is unfamiliar with the job, a production designer on a film or TV show is essentially responsible for the entire art department. They collaborate with the director and producer on the look of a film, deciding the style, sets, costumes, and locations. Then they make those designs a reality. On a genre film, it's an especially big job, as countless designs are considered.
Hopefully Andy Nicholson makes a great addition to Captain Marvel. Anna Bolden and Ryan Fleck are directing with Geneva Robertson-Dworet fine-tuning the script. Brie Larson stars as the title character, who will be the most powerful being the MCU has ever seen. The film will be an origin story set in the 90s and will feature a two-eyed Nick Fury, and the alien race of the Skrulls will be the antagonists. Everything else about the film is being kept under wraps, but it looks like Marvel is throwing all its got into the film.
Captain Marvel is scheduled to land in theaters on March 8, 2019. That's a lot of time still left to wait, so brush up on the movie everything we know so far. For all the movies hitting the theater this year, pay a visit to ourcomprehensive guide to all the movie still left to go in 2017.
