How Jango Fett Actor Temuera Morrison Wants To Return To The Star Wars Universe
One of the things that Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones is best remembered for is shedding light on Boba Fett's origins. After years of being one of the most mysterious figures in the galaxy far, far away, we learned that Boba was a clone of Jango Fett, an equally notorious bounty hunter. Although Jango was dispatched in Attack of the Clones' climatic Geonosis battle, his actor, Temuera Morrison, returned for Episode III: Revenge of the Sith to play/voice Jango's numerous clones. With the Prequel Trilogy now more than a decade behind us, Morrison has expressed interest in returning to the Star Wars universe as arguably the second most famous of Jango's clones after Boba, Captain Rex. Morrison recently stated:
Temuera Morrison is fortunate that despite the death of his primary Star Wars character, he was able to keep contributing to the franchise thanks to the cloners one Kamino making countless copies of Jango Fett. He was even brought in to re-record Boba Fett's original lines for the 2004 re-release of The Empire Strikes Back. Morrison most recently voiced Boba again in the 2015 Star Wars Battlefront video game, but as he told the Australian branch of StarWars.com, he'd be keen on playing someone new from Jango's clone batch next, like Captain Rex. Fortunately for Morrison, age is not a hindrance when it comes to that particular clone.
Captain Rex (officially designated CT-7567) was introduced in the 2008 Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated movie, and would go on to be one of the principal characters in the Clone Wars TV series. Rex was most often seen fighting alongside Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano, but like the other clones in the series, he was voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. Following The Clone Wars series' cancellation, Rex returned in Star Wars Rebels with fellow clones Wolffe and Gregor. The trio didn't help slaughter the Jedi during Order 66 because they had removed their inhibitor chips, and they had spent the 14 years since the Empire's rise to power in hiding on Seelos. Because clones age twice as fast as humans, Rex and the others now looked middle-aged when they were actually only a couple decades old.
So if a Star Wars Anthology spinoff that was set between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope wanted to include Rex, it would be easy enough to have Temuera Morrison portray him rather than hire a different actor. (Although fun fact, some fans have theorized that Rex is the bearded member of Han Solo's Endor raiding party in Return of the Jedi). It's also worth noting that it would be plausible for Morrison to play an older Boba Fett post-Return of the Jedi since he ages normally, but since there's been no official indication that the Star Wars franchise will "resurrect" Boba and have him escape the Sarlacc Pit, Captain Rex would be a great alternative for the actor.
If Temuera Morrison returns to the Star Wars universe, be it in a movie, TV show or video game, we'll be sure to let you know. For now, you can look forward to Morrison appearing as Thomas Curry in Aquaman, which will be released on December 21, 2018.
