Forget Porgs, There's Another New Star Wars Creature We Should Be Talking About
This past weekend was a very exciting one for film fans, as new trailers dropped for both Justice League and Star Wars: The Last Jedi, causing fanboys everywhere to jump for joy. The latter gave the most comprehensive look into the narrative of Rian Johnson's upcoming Star Wars adventure, which will be Carrie Fisher's final run as General Leia. But the new movie will also debut a ton of new Star Wars creatures. And while the Porgs have been on everyone's minds, there's another alien that has been causing conversation with Star Wars fans: the crystal fox/wolf creature that showed up for a moment in the most recent trailer.
The brief clip of this new creature instantly sparked discussion from the Star Wars community. Eventually a fan asked Rian Johnson if the creature was more feline or canine, and he responded via Twitter. Unfortunately, he was pretty cryptic, saying simply:
Well, that's not especially helpful Mr. Johnson.
While Rian Johnson failed to reveal the origin of the new Star Wars alien, he did reveal that the creature is seemingly made of crystal. This information, as well as the backdrop, could potentially help fans figure out which of the franchise's planets the creatures inhabit. Smart money says they're native to Crait, which is a new planet that will be introduced in The Last Jedi. Crait is a mineral mining planet that is covered with in white salt, which is no doubt the background we see the new creature in. Perhaps we'll be able to see an entire group of the crystal creatures when The Resistance eventually battles the First Order on the planet's surface.
Overall, it looks Rian Johnson is bringing a bunch of new characters, settings, and creatures to Star Wars: The Last Jedi. In addition to the Porgs and crystalline creatures, we'll find some new characters added to the franchise in the form of Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo (Laura Dern), the mysterious DJ (Benicio del Toro), and Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran). And with planets like Ach-To, Crait, and Canto Bight factoring in, the galaxy far far away is definitely getting a little bigger.
The Last Jedi will continue the main Star Wars story after The Force Awakens. In the battle of good and evil in the galaxy, various characters will have their principles challenged, as the heroes are tempted by the Dark Side.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi will arrive in theaters on December 15th, 2017. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your trips to the movies in the New Year, and Pre-order your Star Wars: The Last Jedi tickets here.
