A Major X-Men Character Might Die In Dark Phoenix
Jean Grey is primarily known as one of the leading X-Men, but when she becomes the Dark Phoenix, she not only turns into an adversary to the mutant superhero team, she also becomes of the most powerful forces in the universe. Moviegoers have already seen Jean transform into Dark Phoenix during 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand, and after getting another taste of this fiery power last year in X-Men: Apocalypse, we'll see Sophie Turner's Jean succumb to the dark side next year in X-Men: Dark Phoenix. And this latest transformation will apparently come with some major consequences, as one of the "First Class" era characters will reportedly die during the story.
As you'll recall from X-Men: The Last Stand, Jean Grey killed Cyclops and Professor X during her time as Dark Phoenix. Well according to That Hashtag Show, a similar situation will play out in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, as one of the X-Men characters who's been part of the X-Men series since the release of 2011's X-Men: First Class will die facing Jean in her corrupted state. While the character's identity wasn't revealed, apparently they will meet their demise when they're impaled while Jean is displaying her full power.
There are only four major characters still alive that have been part of the main X-Men series since First Class' release: James McAvoy's Professor X, Michael Fassbender's Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence's Mystique and Nicholas Hoult's Beast. Considering that these modern X-Men movies exist in the revised timeline that was created at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, then that would eliminate both Professor X and Beast as candidates for death, as they were seen still alive at the School for Gifted Youngsters when Wolverine awakened in the new 2023. However, even ignoring self-contained movies like Deadpool and Logan, the X-Men series has never been a stickler for continuity, so there's still a chance that either of those two could perish. However, with Magneto and Mystique's fates uncertain, it seems likelier that they will be the ones to bite the dust. Mystique would be a fitting choice since at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse, she became one of the X-Men mentors, so Jean Grey would have a closer relationship with her. On the other hand, Magneto is significantly more equipped to battle Dark Phoenix, thus setting up this impalement scenario.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix will also see the return of Tye Sheridan's Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp's Storm, Kodi Smit-McPhee's Nightcrawler and Evan Peters' Quicksilver, while Olivia Munn is rumored to reprise Psylocke. Jessica Chastain will appear as the yet-to-be-officially-identified main antagonist, while Lamar Johnson and Daniel Cudmore (who previously played Colossus) have been cast in undisclosed roles. X-Men: Dark Phoenix is intended to be a more faithful adaptation of The Dark Phoenix Saga compared to X-Men: The Last Stand, although it won't be quite as intergalactic as the original comic book storyline.
Directed by Simon Kinberg, X-Men: Dark Phoenix opens in theaters on November 2, 2018. Don't forget to check out our X-Men movies guide to see what other mutant-filled projects are on the way.
