Even though Sony has turned to Marvel Studios for help with its main Spider-Man franchise, the studio is still intent on producing its own shared universe of Spider-Man characters. A Venom movie starring Tom Hardy is first on the list and while we have a bunch of questions about it, not too much is known about the project. Hardy is undergoing physical training for the role, and a behind-the-scenes video of his workout may have revealed some interesting details about his character. Venom will be immensely powerful with an inner fire and ready to start some "carnage."
Like any actor for a comic book role, Tom Hardy has to undergo some pretty intense physical training in order to bring the character to the big screen. Seeing as how Venom can be ridiculously muscular, Hardy has a lot of work ahead of him, but his trainers say that he loves it. In a behind-the-scenes video, two of Hardy's trainers talk about the Mad Max actor and his workout routine, which involves plenty of kickboxing. Does this mean Venom is going to be doing a lot of close combat or is it just a workout? They also talk about how Hardy loves to fight and that he brings an inner fire with him to training every day.
Perhaps the biggest takeaway from this video is right at the end when one of the trainers discusses Venom as a character. He says that Tom Hardy is "doing the work" to transform into an 8' 4" beast, and that "what the world is going to see is one of the darkest most powerful supervillains that Marvel's ever created. It's going to be carnage." Venom is shooting for an R-rating, and it sounds like it's going to earn that with an extremely dark tone. Fans can also expect Venom to be extremely powerful. Venom has all the powers of Spider-Man, but is usually much physically stronger. And while Venom is something of an anti-hero, he's referred to here as a straight-up supervillain. Does this mean he won't be a lethal protector, but the actual villain of his own movie?
And don't think we didn't notice that bit about carnage at the end. The trainer could just be having a bit of fun, but fans know that Carnage is another Spider-Man villain with close ties to Venom. They are both alien symbiotes, but whereas Venom is usually more honorable, Carnage is just a psychopath. Carnage is in the movie as a central villain, so he has a major role to play in the comic book movie.
Venom is directed by Ruben Fleischer and star Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, and Riz Ahmed. The movie is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on October 8, 2018. To learn more, here's what we know so far about Venom.
