Channing Tatum's Animated Smallfoot Trailer Is Beastly And Fun
As Channing Tatum prepares to maybe, finally, try out a Cajun accent in the oft discussed, long-delayed Gambit movie, he is putting his voice to work in another role but one that is a bit more fun and family-friendly. Warner Bros. Pictures has dropped the first teaser trailer for Smallfoot, an animated film with an all-star cast, set to debut next year. Smallfoot looks to be a cheery animated adventure that explores the culture clash between two equally mysterious and deadly beasts. Check out the trailer below:
We don't get a ton of plot in this teaser trailer but it gives us a taste of what we are in for. Knowing nothing about this movie beforehand I had no idea what to expect. When the wannabe Yukon Cornelius, Percy, encounters the legendary and mythical Yeti, I was expecting the two to strike up a friendship, and I'm pretty sure that will still be the case. But, I was not expecting the Yeti to be the main character of the film whose viewpoint we would be following. This is an interesting reversal that can allow for some deeper subtext to the story. This dynamic also provided for the comedic moments in the trailer where Channing Tatum's Yeti, Migo, tells stories of the fabled and monstrous human beings, small of feet and fresh of breath, they know as 'Smallfoot.'
It is hard to gauge what the central conflict will be beyond the two species trying to understand one another. Meeting a creature you thought a fictitious monster only to find the truth far more complicated should allow for an interesting dynamic as Migo and Percy grow to know one another. This movie kind of seems like someone was watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and loved the dynamic between Yukon Cornelius and Bumble the Abominable Snow Monster and decided to make a movie based on those them. Migo even kind of looks like the Bumble. It remains to be seen if Migo and his Yeti brethren are practicing proper dental hygiene.
Smallfoot stands as an original film in a year that is already jam-packed with animated sequels in popular franchises such as Hotel Transylvania 3 and The Incredibles 2. As is the case with most animated children's movies these days, despite my doubts that children care, this movie has a star-studded voice cast. Channing Tatum's Migo will mostly be playing off of James Corden, who voices the Smallfoot, Percy. They are joined by the voice talents of Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Gina Rodriguez and Danny DeVito. Smallfoot is directed by Karey Kirkpatrick and is set to debut in theaters on September 28, 2018. For all of next years biggest releases, check out our release schedule.
