So, Who Is The 8th Member Of Ocean's 8?
The first official trailer for Gary Ross' Ocean's 8 dropped yesterday, and the all-female reboot of the fan-favorite heist franchise seems to be off to a intriguing start. Ocean's 8 appears to be playing into what we love about Ocean's Eleven, especially in the sense that every member of the crew has a clear-cut role and job in the upcoming heist. However, as many fans have already noticed, the new crew only has seven members during an early planning scene. With that in mind, it has led some to interesting fan theories about Member 8 -- particularly in regards to Anne Hathaway's Daphne Kluger.
In addition to Sandra Bullock's Debbie Ocean, Ocean's 8 will also introduce audiences to a group of expert thieves consisting of Lou (Cate Blanchett), Tammy (Sarah Paulson), Rose (Helena Bonham Carter), Constance (Awkwafina), Amita (Mindy Kaling), and Nine Ball (Rihanna) -- all of whom come together to steal a $150 million piece of jewelry from the aforementioned Daphne Kluger at the Met Gala. The trailer seems to suggest the possibility that Kluger is the mark who will have the necklace stolen from her, but newly-surfaced theories have begun to suggest that, because celebrities often wear jewelry that doesn't belong to them, Kluger may be an insider helping Debbie Ocean pull off the heist.
This potential idea seems further reinforced by the fact the scenes in the Ocean's 8 trailer in which Daphne Kluger isn't in the spotlight. She looks like she's up to no good, which could make her a perfect addition to Debbie Ocean's gang.
This compelling theory about Anne Hathaway's character is one of the better indications that Ocean's 8 is switching up the formula by making the heist a direct inside job, but it's not the only possibility out there. Among the other possibilities for an eighth member of the group is James Corden's character, as well as Matt Damon's Linus Caldwell and Carl Reiner's Saul Bloom, both of whom are expected to make cameo appearances. Then again, there's always the possibility that George Clooney's Danny Ocean (despite the trailer's suggestion that he has died) may actually be working as a secret eighth member of the group. All of these seem like viable options. That said, given the emphasis on the fact that Ocean's 8 is very much an all-female reboot of the series, making Member 8 a man seems somewhat less likely, and a potential thematic miscalculation.
