Will The Iron Spider Costume Have Legs In Avengers: Infinity War?
At the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) finally gifted the Iron Spider costume to Peter Parker (Tom Holland) while offering the young hero full-time membership among The Avengers. Peter initially refused the suit in favor of his classic red and blue outfit, but the trailer for Avengers: Infinity War has already confirmed that Spidey will don the armor in the battle against Thanos (Josh Brolin). That in itself is already an exciting development, but a newly-leaked look at an Avengers: Infinity War LEGO set also seems to suggest that the Iron Spider costume may even feature its iconic legs in the upcoming film. Check out the leaked image, below.
As far as narrative context is concerned, this leak seems to line up with many fan expectations about how Spider-Man will get involved in the events of Avengers: Infinity War. Based on the recent footage, we know that he will don the Iron Spider armor when Thanos' ship appears over New York, which seems to lead to the rumored "The Battle in the Sanctum Sanctorum" section of the film. We haven't seen much of the full sequence in which Spidey stands alongside heroes like Tony Stark, Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), and Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), but this LEGO set suggests that the Iron Spider suit will sprout its legs during the fight.
It would make a certain degree of sense for the legs to show up in Avengers: Infinity War. The Iron Spider suit has remained a fan-favorite element of the Spider-Man lore since it first appeared in Mark Millar's Civil War comic book arc, and the fact that the armor didn't appear in Captain America: Civil War has left it open for further exploration in future movies.
Peter spent most of Spider-Man: Homecoming tinkering with the classic suit, so for him to discover the legs on this new armor in Infinity War and use them in the battle against The Black Order seems logical enough. That said, we also know that Spider-Man will receive some significant injuries and find himself apologizing in Tony's arms later in the movie, so it doesn't look like the legs will give him the full edge that he needs to win.
Of course, one thing worth acknowledging about this leaked LEGO image is that some creative liberties may have been taken in the creation of this toy set. Just because a LEGO set includes something doesn't necessarily mean that it will end up in the final cut of the movie. What works in toy form may not work for a movie. Moreover, the Iron Spider armor seen in the MCU does already have some notable aesthetic differences from the traditional Iron Spider outfit, which means it's entirely possible that the live-action iteration of the suit just doesn't have the same features.
Audiences will find out whether or not the Iron Spider suit has its arachnid-like appendages when Avengers: Infinity War debuts in theaters later this year on May 4.
