It is no secret that Disney has an army of movies in development right now. One of the most interesting of the bunch is Prince Charming, which will be helmed by The Perks of Being A Wallflower's Stephen Chbosky, and has remained relatively under-the-radar since its announcement. That said, while speaking with CinemaBlend to promote the home release of Wonder, Chbosky revealed that his approach to Prince Charming shares parallels with Rob Reiner's 1987 classic The Princess Bride in its take on the romance/adventure genre. Per Chbosky:
You know what they can expect? They can expect Prince Charming to be very cool. Yeah. It's gonna be a really cool movie. Like Princess Bride meets Disney kind of thing. It's like that. It's fun. It's a really fun romantic adventure and I'm very excited about it.
If you're a fan of classic, swashbuckling fairy tales, then Stephen Chbosky's promise of a Prince Charming movie in the vein of The Princess Bride should feel pretty exciting. He wouldn't go into detail about any specific plot elements during his chat with CinemaBlend, but referencing The Princess Bride conjures an apparent sense of tone and style in the minds of most audiences. There will be swordplay and romance, but there could also be a self-aware sense of irreverence that makes it even more exciting.
All things considered, Stephen Chbosky probably already knows a thing or two about the world of The Princess Bride. After all, he did manage to cast Inigo Montoya actor Mandy Patinkin as Mr. Tushman in his 2017 film Wonder.
Are we saying that Mandy Patinkin will make an appearance in Prince Charming? Absolutely not. That said, now that we have addressed the possibility, it is hard not to think about how cool it would be.
Framing a Prince Charming movie in the spirit of The Princess Bride seems to show a willingness for the folks at Disney to branch out and evolve classic stories in fascinating ways. This move arguably feels somewhat similar to the rumors related to Niki Caro's upcoming Mulan movie, which have suggested that the live-action remake of the classic Disney cartoon will have an action-heavy tone that focuses on martial arts to help set it apart from films like Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella.
Although we don't know a ton about the upcoming Prince Charming movie, we do know the plot won't totally be like The Princess Bride. Early rumors related to the film have suggested a story focusing on the titular character's brother as a black sheep who doesn't quite fit in with his family, rather than on the more familiar and beloved Prince. That in itself is a far cry from what we're used to seeing from Prince Charming or The Princess Bride worlds, so it seems that Stephen Chbosky is still going to try and give audiences something fresh with this well-worn storyline.
With all of that said, although the promise of a Prince Charming movie in the vein of The Princess Bride is intriguing, we will just have to see how the film comes together as it continues to develop. For now, Stephen Chbosky's Wonder is now available on Digital HD, and the Blu-ray will hit shelves next week on February 13.
