The Deadpool 2 Trailer Features A Fun Goonies Reference
By his very nature, Wade Wilson is a comic book hero who can make some truly fun pop culture references. In Deadpool, much of this stems from Ryan Reynolds' inherent ability to play a smartass, as well as Wade's ability to break the fourth wall. Now, with Deadpool 2 on the horizon for this May, it looks like the references have not slowed down. In fact, it looks like the newly-released Deadpool 2 trailer has a reference to Richard Donner's The Goonies that some of you might not have initially noticed. Check it out, below.
It is no secret that Wade Wilson loves his floral shirts. He even wore them during the events of the first Deadpool. However, with Deadpool 2 now coming, it seems that he upped his wardrobe game to include a subtle nod towards Chunk from The Goonies. We still don't know if Wade will end up doing the Truffle Shuffle at any point during the movie, but something tells us that this Easter egg will get fans of Richard Donner's 1985 classic adventure movie very excited.
The possibility of this Goonies reference being little more than a coincidence seems even less likely when we consider the fact that Ryan Reynolds has already acknowledged it. Following the initial post calling it out, the Deadpool star took to social media to confirm its authenticity.
It is hard to be surprised by this little nod when we take all of the Deadpool franchise's other pop culture references into account. Just looking back at the original movie from 2016, we can recall numerous references to movies like Green Lantern and X-Men Origins: Wolverine (both of which featured Ryan Reynolds). Looking ahead to Deadpool 2, we have already seen references to Toy Story, The Golden Girls (Bea Arthur, specifically), and now this nod to The Goonies. With only a few months left until the highly-anticipated sequel finally debuts, something tells us that this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as pop culture references and movie callbacks are concerned.
Audiences will get a chance to see that Goonies reference (and hopefully many more) when Deadpool 2 hits theaters later this year on May 18.
