Marvel Studios has been promising a lot when it comes to Avengers: Infinity War, its biggest movie to date. Not only is the movie supposed to have real stakes, but there's a very solid chance that not every Avenger is making it out of this one alive. For a while, the number one theory for most likely to kick the bucket has been Steve Rogers, due to the characters death in the comics and Chris Evans' expiring Marvel contract. Many have assumed that someone else will take over the mantle of Captain America, with the prime choice being Bucky Barnes. Here's what Sebastian Stan had to say on the matter:..
In the comics, after Steve Rogers is killed following the events of Civil War, Bucky Barnes takes over as Captain America. Seeing as how Bucky had just spent the past several decades murdering people as the brainwashed Winter Soldier, he had a real uphill battle in front of him, but it made for a compelling character journey. Fans have long been waiting to see this dynamic play out on the big screen, and Sebastian Stan -- the actor who plays Bucky in the MCU -- is right there with them.
In a recent appearance at Wizard World St. Louis, Sebastian Stan was asked during his panel if he would ever want to take over as Captain America in the movies. The answer was a definite yes, but he didn't know when that might happen. Bucky still isn't totally trustworthy with his Winter Soldier programming still in his brain, so he may need more time before someone hands him a shield.
It would definitely be cool to see someone else take over the mantle of Captain Amerca in future movies. We know that the MCU won't look the same post-Avengers 4, so it stands to reason that someone will rise up in the event of Steve Rogers deaths. While Bucky might be the most obvious choice, Sam Wilson has also been Captain America and either of those two would be interesting choices.
We'll see if our fan theories are finally realized when Avengers: Infinity War arrives in theaters on May 4, 2018. To learn more about the movie, here's everything we know so far.
