Who Finn Should End Up With In Star Wars: Episode IX, According To John Boyega
While it was released over two months ago, fans still haven't stopped dissecting every frame from Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi. The blockbuster subverted fan expectations and delivered a sequel that greatly expanded the beloved franchise. But Johnson also left a ton of question unanswered, making the anticipation for J.J. Abrams' Episode IX already at a fever pitch. One of the looming questions surrounding the current trilogy is who John Boyega's Finn would ultimately end up with. Rose Tico, Rey, and even Poe have been floating around as possibilities, and now Boyega has given his two cents regarding who the real subject of his character's affection should be. He said,
Finn himself has spoken, and it looks like he's ready for he and Rey to finally become a real couple. The two character's relationship was painfully obvious in The Force Awakens, but the various plot lines of The Last Jedi kept them separated. Episode IX will bring them back together, and hopefully give them a chance to become a full blown couple.
While Finn's romantic possibilities seem endless, Rey is definitely the most obvious choice. John Boyega's signature character could barely speak around Rey in The Force Awakens, and his adoration for the Force sensitive girl was very obvious. But the two were separated for the majority of The Last Jedi, making way for Finn to meet Rose Tico.
Rose and Finn went on their failed mission to Canto Bight during the course of The Last Jedi, in an attempt to save The Resistance. They eventually formed a strong bond, with Rose going so far as to save Finn from dying during the battle on Crait. The two eventually shared a brief kiss, although Finn didn't seem especially into it -- perhaps he had Rey on the brain.
Parts of the internet have also been hoping for a Finn/Poe romance, due to their instant connection in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Finn ended up wearing Poe's jacket throughout both films, and Poe even gave Finn his name while they escaped from Starkiller Base. These rumors have gained traction throughout the years mostly due to Oscar Isaac himself, who keeps joking that he's playing a romantic story with John Boyega. Plus J.J Abrams has stated his intentions to include queer characters in the franchise.
John Boyega's comments to Slash Film do seem like the most logical series of events for Finn's character. Both the fans and the characters themselves have been waiting for Finn and Rey to reunite after The Force Awakens, so the upcoming threequel is the perfect opportunity.
The next installment in the franchise is Solo: A Star Wars Story on May 25, 2018. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
