Robert Downey Jr. Says Sherlock Holmes 3 Is Happening
Robert Downey Jr. has been a busy actor of late. He just finished filming on the back-to-back productions Avengers: Infinity War and the still-untitled Avengers 4 a few weeks ago. Following that he hopped directly into The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle, with Downey Jr. playing the famous Doctor Dolittle. However, the actor doesn't seem to be slowing down in the least. Instead, he says he has a slew of projects in the works, including the rumored Sherlock Holmes 3. According to Robert Downey Jr.,
While Robert Downey Jr. isn't expressly telling EW Sherlock Holmes 3 is next on his bucket list, it's still encouraging that the actor is still thinking about doing another film in the franchise. The last movie, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, came out way back in 2011. While a third movie has been rumored since then, the last time Sherlock Holmes 3 had any sort of traction was in 2016, when the movie moved into pre-production with James Coyne reportedly working on a script. Obviously, in the time since, Robert Downey Jr. has been busy with Marvel projects as he had a solid run of Avengers: Age of Ultron, Captain America: Civil War, a minor gig in Spider-Man: Homecoming and then the back-to-back filming of the upcoming Avengers-oriented movies. That's a lot of Marvel in a row.
Following the movie that have already filmed, Robert Downey Jr.'s contract with Marvel will be up. Both Downey Jr. and Marvel head honcho have been open about some deaths occurring in the MCU coming up, as well. We wouldn't be shocked if Iron Man did end up being one of the casualties of the heroes' fight against Thanos, but even if Iron Man ends up surviving, Downey Jr. would have to sign on for more movies. Which means he could open up his schedule to a lot of other projects, like Sherlock Holmes 3. However, he did also mention that he might be taking a break after Dolittle, so it's hard to tell when the next Holmes-oriented movie could get off of the ground.
We still have a little while to wait before we know whether or not any of the main Avengers will bite the dust in Avengers: Infinity War. There's a chance we'll have to wait until Avengers 4 to figure out the fate of most of the Avengers. Still, Disney and Marvel did recently push up the release date for Infinity War, so at least we will be getting the flick in just a few short weeks!
