To say that there's a lot of excitement for Avengers: Infinity War would be an understatement. For years, this movie has been hyped as the Marvel Cinematic Universe's biggest movie yet, and thanks to a scheduling change, we're now only six weeks away from it screening to the masses. This week has especially driven anticipation for Infinity War higher thanks to numerous set reports, and it culminated this morning in not just a new trailer and poster being dropped online, but advanced tickets for the movie going on sale. While it remains to be seen what kind of records Infinity War will break once its in theaters, it has already become the best advance-selling superhero movie of all time, and that happened in just six hours.
According to Deadline, Avengers: Infinity War has already soared past previous record holder Black Panther (which toppled Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for that position) to become Fandango's best-selling superhero movie during the first 24 hours of pre-sales. Advance tickets went on sale at 6 a.m. PST, and by noon, Infinity War had already risen to the top of the pack. Fandango also surveyed more than 1,000 users who bought Infinity War tickets today, and interesting statistics included 97% looking forward to seeing how dozens of superheroes work together in the same movie, 87% having seen all of the MCU movies and 60% claiming that Black Panther made them more excited to see Infinity War.
While I'm not shocked that so many people are buying tickets for Avengers: Infinity War ahead of time, I am a little surprised that it took only six hours for it to break the record set by two other major superhero movies, one of which is still performing strongly at the box office. Still, with Infinity War poised to not just be the biggest Marvel movie this year, but arguably the biggest blockbuster of 2018, it stands to reason that many folks want to acquire their tickets for it now rather than risk buying them later and discovering that they're already sold out.
Of course, it is worth a reminder that just because Avengers: Infinity War is a huge milestone for the MCU doesn't mean it will ultimately go down as the franchise's most eventful movie. Let's not forget that Avengers 4 arrives next year, and not only is it as massive in scale as Infinity War, but it will also be both the final installment of Phase 3 and wrap up numerous plot threads that have been seeded throughout the franchise since it inception. So it's a safe bet that Avengers 4 will also sell a lot of advanced tickets and potentially even shatter the record Infinity War just set.
