Shazam Gets A Sweet New Logo, But Where's That Costume Shot, DC?
While Aquaman continues the post-production process, the following installment of the DC Extended Universe, Shazam!, has been rolling cameras since late January. Shazam! promises to be an especially unique entry in this superhero franchise, as we'll watch the adolescent Billy Batson gain the ability to turn into an adult superhero. Ever since Shazam! kicked off principal photography, many DC fans have been looking forward to seeing an official image of Zachary Levi dressed in the Shazam costume, and while DC and New Line Cinema have yet to deliver that, they did release the official Shazam! logo today, as you can see below.
As far as movie logos go, Shazam!'s looks really good, as the red coloring of the letters and the lightning bolt channel the character's appearance from the comics. Nevertheless, this logo serves as a reminder that we still haven't seen an official image of the DCEU's Shazam yet. Shazam! is nearly two months into filming, and while there are still many weeks to go after that, it would be great if we could see an official shot of Zachary Levi in character as the World's Mightiest Mortal. But for now, this logo will suffice.
Even though we don't have a timetable on when DC and New Line will release an official image of Zachary Levi as Shazam, unofficial pictures of the actor in costume on set have been leaked online over the last few weeks. Looking at those images, you'll see that the outfit looks like the one the hero wore in the 2014 animated movie, Justice League: War. That being said, as we've seen numerous times over the years, set photos rarely do justice to how a character will look in the finalized movie. So ideally before filming wraps up, we'll be treated to an official Shazam! photo to get a better idea of how the Big Red Cheese will look on the big screen.
Taking inspiration from both Shazam's (formerly known as Captain Marvel) classic roots and New 52 history, Shazam! will follow the 14-year-old Billy Batson clash with the sinister Doctor Sivana using his new powers that call back to mythological figures: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury. In addition to Zachary Levi as Shazam, the movie's main cast includes Asher Angel as Billy Batson, Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley and Ron Cephas Jones as The Wizard (who also goes by Shazam).
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! will work its magic in theaters on April 5, 2019. To learn what else the DCEU has in development, look through our handy DC movies guide.
