One Way Captain Marvel Will Rock 90s Culture
It's a very exciting time for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU is still riding the massive success of Ryan Coogler's Black Panther, while Avengers: Infinity War will unite all of the shared universe's characters for an epic battle against Josh Brolin's Thanos. One of the few heroes yet to make their debut is Brie Larson's Captain Marvel. The first female led superhero movie will debut come in 2019, although fans are hoping she has quick cameo in Infinity War as well. The origin story will take place largely in the 1990's, and set photos recently revealed one way that 90s culture will be factoring into the blockbuster: the fashion.
While Captain Marvel is attempting to keep its contents secret, Marvel's Kevin Feige has admitted that leaks are going to happen because they're shooting quite a bit outside. This past week brought quite a few of these set photos, revealing Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. But instead of wearing a strangely colored super suit or an Air Force uniform, Carol is in her civies. And they're so deliciously 90s, you'll want to whip out a Smashing Pumpkins CD.
Actually Smashing Pumpkins is one of the 90s bands that isn't showing up in Carol Danver's wardrobe, which is decidedly punk rock inspired. She's known wearing t-shirts for Guns N' Roses, when she's not rocking a classic Air Force shirt. Considering the public's love for nostlagia and 90s culture, it looks like the costumes won't disappoint. Since Carol's sense of music is also represented, Captain Marvel also has the potential for an awesome soundtrack.
Another shot from the set of Captain Marvel shows Brie Larson's upcoming hero wearing just about the most 90s thing possible: a flannel shirt tied around her waist. That has been the go to costume for any college 90s party in the past decade, and it once again shows that Marvel studios is having fun playing within a new timeline.
Indeed the 90s setting is one of the most fascinating aspects of Captain Marvel. Her movie will be set before any of the previous installments, including 2007's Iron Man. It will show a thriving S.H.I.E.L.D. in its hayday, bringing back beloved characters in the process. Samuel L. Jackson will return to the MCU to play a non-cycloptic version of Nick Fury, while Clark Gregg will be "brought back to life" as Agent Coulson-- the first time Coulson has appeared on the silver screen since his death in The Avengers.
It will no doubt be interesting to see how Captain Marvel's origin story affects the eventual formation of The Avengers. The fact that it's being told through a 90s lens is just a bonus.
Captain Marvel will arrive in theaters March 8, 2019. In the meantime, check out our 2018 release list to plan your next trip to the movies.
