Aquaman Just Changed Its Release Date
Though summer 2018 will largely be defined by the debut of Marvel movies like Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and The Wasp, DC has a solo movie up its sleeve for later this year when James Wan's Aquaman premieres in theaters. There's a lot of enthusiasm to see Jason Momoa take center stage after his fan-favorite portrayal of the aquatic hero in Zack Snyder's Justice League last year, and now it looks like fans in the United Kingdom will be able to see the ocean-based solo film one week sooner than expected.
That is right, folks, it looks like Aquaman is shifting its release date in the UK, taking it from a December 21, 2018 release date to a December 14 premiere. This is a notable shift in status quo for the folks at DC, as recent DCEU films like Justice League and Wonder Woman have received simultaneously releases in European and domestic markets. As of right now, no definitive explanation has been provided for why Warner Bros. has moved the film up.
The Digital Spy report about the date change suggests that only the UK release date for Aquaman has been moved up, meaning that the film will still debut in American theaters on December 21. That said, on the heels of this announcement, it remains entirely possible that the folks at DC will move up the domestic release date as well. That would not necessarily be surprising, as the Marvel Cinematic Universe recently surprised many of us by bumping the release of Avengers: Infinity War up to April 27 from its initial May 4 release date. For now, however, it's just the UK release that has shifted for Aquaman.
Of course, while it's exciting to know that some fans will get a chance to see Aquaman one week earlier than previously expected, it also serves as a reminder that we have yet to see anything from the 2018 DCEU solo film. No trailer has dropped yet, and most of the glimpses that we have received of the film have come from leaked behind-the-scenes photos. With no glimpses at Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), Orm (Patrick Wilson), Vulko (Willem Dafoe), or many other crucial characters, there's still a lot of information that we need to get before the actual film can make its grand debut this winter.
So for now, Aquaman will debut in theaters for UK audiences on December 14, and it will premiere in American theaters on December 21. CinemaBlend will bring you more updates related to the upcoming DCEU solo film as new information becomes available to us, and for now, you can head over to our movie premiere guide to see what other films are set to hit the big screen in 2018.
