Why Han And Chewie Will Butt Heads In Solo: A Star Wars Story
Among the most popular elements of the original Star Wars trilogy was the friendship between Han Solo and Chewbacca. They're one of the best duos in genre fiction, so when Han was killed off in The Force Awakens, Chewie's reaction to his best bud being stabbed by his own son made the scene all the more heartbreaking. Fortunately, we have at least one more movie to see these characters together, as Solo: A Star Wars Story will depict some of their earlier adventures. However, because Han and Chewie haven't been friends for as long at this point, they'll clash a little bit during the latest Star Wars spinoff. As Alden Ehrenreich put it:
Within the Star Wars timeline, Solo: A Star Wars Story takes place approximately a decade into the Empire's reign across the galaxy far, far away, meaning it's also been 10 years since Chewbacca and the Wookie chieftain Tarrful helped Yoda escape Kashyyyk after Order 66 was executed during Revenge of the Sith. Following that, like the most of the Wookie population, Chewbacca was enslaved by the Empire, but when Han Solo freed him from forced servitude, he swore a life debt to the cocky smuggler, which kicked off their decades-long friendship. Nevertheless, Chewie's has seen a lot over nearly two centuries, whereas Alden Ehrenreich's Han is only in his mid-to-late 20s, so Ehrenreich's comment to USA Today makes sense. Chewie's accumulated a lot more wisdom than the impulsive Han, so they'll disagree on how to handle certain things during Solo: A Star Wars Story, as evidenced by the latest trailer where Han responds to Chewie's suggestion with, "Well, what do you know?"
Even with their disagreements, from what's been shown of Solo: A Star Wars Story so far, it looks like Han Solo and Chewbacca will develop quite the bond with one another. The latest Star Wars movie follows the duo as Han is trying to make a name for himself in the galactic underworld. To prove he has the chops, he and Chewie will pull off a dangerous heist with a crew that includes Lando Calrissian, Tobias Beckett, Qi'ra, Val and L3-37. At 190 years old, Chewie's already been on a lot of adventures, but I expect the events of this movie will rank as one of the more exciting ones. That being said, it's nothing compared to what's coming for these two about 10 years later once they meet a young farm boy and Jedi master in the Mos Eisely Cantina.
Directed by Ron Howard, Solo: A Star Wars Story blasts its way into theaters on May 25. If you're interested in finding out what other movies arrived this year, look through our 2018 release schedule.
